The Anyama Fe Atie Oge festival has its origins from the 1967 Nigerian civil war when two (2) Biafran Army units, one stationed in Anyama and another advancing from Yenagoa by river, mistakenly engaged each other in a fierce gun battle after each side believed it was confronting federal troops.
The gunfire forced residents of Anyama to flee into nearby forests for safety and returning back to the community with no loss of lives and properties, despite several casualties amongst the service men, and undoubtedly convinced that their survival was a divine miracle, the elders proclaimed 1st, August 1967, as Anyama Fe Atei Oge Festival Day, a tradition that has been observed annually ever since, and evolving into a week-long cultural celebration.

Mr. Richard Erepamo Akinaka, who was born and spent all of his adolescence in his community (Igbomotoru), Southern Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa state was eager not miss the popular ijaw Draft Game Competition and watched keenly as participants warred on the board, applauding the organising committee led by Mr. Daniel Jerimiah for their thorough job in preserving this unique aspect of the community’s cultural heritage.

In recognition of excellence and sportsmanship, Mr. Richard Erepamo Akinaka presented cash gifts to the three outstanding winners as a way to encourage continued participation in cultural activities that promote unity and identity.

Beginning on the 27th of July, 1957, a nefarious buffalo who had attacked and killed several sons and daughters of Odi was finally annihilated by brave Odi sons prompting a celebratory victory of drums and joyous voices which has metamorphosied over the years to an annual cultural event drawing thousands within the nation and diaspora to celebrate the resilience of the people of Odi in the face of adversity.
