Both goals came from set pieces. Ajayi (a centre-back who joined Hull on a free transfer from West Brom in 2025) scored from close range after Oli McBurnie’s effort from a Regan Slater corner was parried by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Mendy (Hull’s club-record summer signing from Rayo Vallecano, making his Premier League debut) then headed home another Slater delivery from a free-kick. 

Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick (in his first full season after finishing third the previous campaign), dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances and failed to deal with Hull’s set-piece threat. Marcus Rashford came on at half-time for his first competitive appearance in a long time but could not spark a comeback. 

Hull manager Sergej Jakirović’s side claimed a famous result on their return to the top flight.
