Suspected Serial Killer Akaninyene from Obot Akara Arrested in Creektown Forest Hut

Akaninyene, an indigene of Obot Akara, was arrested yesterday in Creektown following intelligence that linked him to the disappearance and murder of a recent victim. Security operatives, acting on the tip, tracked him to an isolated hut he built inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, Creektown.

On arrival, men of the Nigerian Army and a tactical special forces squad, led by community youths and elders, attempted to secure the area. Akaninyene noticed the invasion, ran into the hut to retrieve a weapon, but was quickly surrounded. He tried to escape into the forest but was apprehended by the tactical team.

A search of the compound revealed multiple shallow graves. About 8 graves were uncovered, each containing the remains of up to 5 people buried without their heads. Plantain crops had been planted over the graves to conceal them. The discovery suggests the killings may have been ongoing for some time.

During interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to killing about 30 people in the community who had gone missing without trace. He was forced to lead operatives to the graves, where bodies without heads were exhumed.

He further confessed that the last killing, which triggered his arrest, occurred on Tuesday, 26th May 2026. He claimed he carried it out with the help of a lady who allegedly held the victim’s head. According to him, the lady was used to lure victims to their deaths, and he described the method they used.

The alarm was first raised after community members heard a struggle and cries from the last victim. Hon. Councilor representing Creektown Ward 1, Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, alongside the Ward Chairman, youths, and elders, reported the case of missing persons to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido. He immediately alerted security operatives, who responded swiftly.

Breaking News: FG Cancels $717.7million World Bank Power Intervention Loan

The Federal Government has cancelled $717.7m in undisbursed World Bank financing for Nigeria’s troubled electricity sector, effectively terminating the remaining portion of a $1.52bn power sector recovery programme amid mounting tariff shortfalls, worsening financial pressures, and persistent implementation challenges across the industry.

Documents obtained by The PUNCH from the World Bank website on Monday showed that the cancellation followed a formal request by the Federal Government and a joint decision by both parties to discontinue financing under the Power Sector Recovery Performance-Based Operation due to evolving sector realities and the inability to achieve key reform milestones.

According to the World Bank restructuring paper, the cancelled amount represents the entire undisbursed balance remaining under the programme. “The restructuring will result in the cancellation of the entire undisbursed balance in the amount of $717.7m equivalent, and no further disbursements will be made under the Program following approval of this restructuring,” the bank stated.

The original Power Sector Recovery Performance-Based Operation was approved on June 23, 2020, with financing of about $752.5m equivalent. The programme was structured to improve electricity supply reliability, strengthen the sector’s financial and fiscal sustainability, and enhance accountability among key institutions in the electricity value chain.

Following initial progress recorded under the programme, the World Bank approved an Additional Financing package of approximately $763.5m equivalent on June 9, 2023, to consolidate earlier gains and support a new phase of reforms. The financing became effective on June 19, 2024, and extended the project’s closing date to June 30, 2027.

Together, the original financing and the additional facility amounted to about $1.52bn.

Senate approves Tinubu’s $6bn loan request

The Senate has approved the request of President Bola Tinubu to go for external loans totalling $6 billion.

The approval came after the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read the letter from the president, seeking the approval.

The Senate approved the loans following the presentation and consideration of the report by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, APC, Sokoto North, Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts.

Earlier, President Tinubu’s request to borrow was contained in two separate letters addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, that were read during plenary on Tuesday.

In the first letter read by Akpabio, President Tinubu requested the approval to establish a structured total return swap (TRS) external financing programme of up to $5 billion with First Abu Dhabi Bank of the United Arab Emirates.

In the letter, President Tinubu, who noted that the facility would be made available to Nigeria in tranches, said, “The purpose of this letter is to request the approval and resolution of the National Assembly pursuant to the provisions of section 21(1) and 27(1) of the Debt Management Office Establishment Act 2003 to establish a structured total return swap (TRS) derivative external financing programme from First Abu Dhabi Bank of the United Arab Emirates of up to $5 billion, which will be made available to the Federal Republic of Nigeria in tranches.”

According to Tinubu, the proceeds would be used for budget implementation, development of priority infrastructure projects and repayment of relatively expensive domestic and external debts, adding that the facility would also help the federal government meet urgent financial obligations when necessary.

The president said that Nigeria’s total public debt currently stands at $110.3 billion, equivalent to about N159.2 trillion as of December 31, 2025.

Ikot Abasi Seaport Receives First Vessel, More Ships Expected in Akwa Ibom

The Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, officially received the first vessel at its newly completed seaport on March 1, 2026.

A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Transport witnessed the development, alongside officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and other port regulatory agencies.

With the completion of the port, equipment, machinery, materials, and containers destined for the Free Zone will now be discharged directly at Ikot Abasi, instead of being routed through Calabar or Onne ports.

The development marks a major operational milestone for the Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone and is expected to improve logistics efficiency within the zone.

Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizers Ltd, as well as the management of the Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone, have been congratulated on the achievement.

More vessels are expected at the port in the coming days.

Credit has also gone to former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel for his role in advancing the broader vision behind the project.
