RIVERS UNITED FC: THE JOURNEY SO FAR

In 2016, two giants of Rivers football laid down their identities for a bigger dream. Sharks FC and Dolphins FC merged. From that union came Rivers United FC — with a mandate that sounded ambitious then, but prophetic now: to put Rivers State on top of Nigeria, Africa and World football.

Nine years later, that statement no longer sounds like ambition. It sounds like fact.

Guided with the Rivers State government mandate by Barr. Chris Green and Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, the club was built with structure first. No shortcuts. No relegation battles. From day one, Rivers United set out to stay in the top flight. We have.

The breakthrough was emphatic. In 2021–22, Rivers United didn’t just win the NPFL — We broke it. 77 points. 23 wins. 10 points clear. It was the first league title since the merger, and the first for Rivers State in 11 years.

But the real legacy has been written in Africa. While Nigerian clubs struggled for continental relevance, Rivers United showed up, year after year. Four Champions League campaigns. Four Confederation Cup runs. A quarter-final in 2022–23.

Those results did more than bring pride to Port Harcourt. They earned Nigeria the points to keep four clubs in CAF competitions — a lifeline for the entire league.

Today, Rivers United are ranked No.1 in Nigeria and sit alone as the only Nigerian club in CAF’s Top 30.
