You have made freelancing look like a lottery ticket. People post payments, Wins, Screenshots, Client alerts and suddenly, everybody thinks “Once I learn a skill, money will start flowing next week.”

I wish more people would tell beginners the truth.
Listen, learning a digital skill is not magic. It’s not MMM or betting neither is it from urgent 2k piam 2 million. It takes a little time, patience, practice, rejection and improvement.

I would always say to those I have shared knowledge with, give yourself at least 6 months of serious learning and consistency before concluding that “it doesn’t work.” Because many people quit during the stage where they were actually growing.

Here are some skills that can genuinely make you money online:

1. Virtual Assistance
A lot of business owners need help with managing emails, scheduling, admin support, customer service, research, organization. Solve the problem and collect money.

2. Content Creation/Social media management
Writing posts, creating videos( learn videography), managing pages, storytelling, content strategy. Businesses are looking for visibility every day, people to engage audiences, organize content, respond to messages and help pages grow.

5. Graphic Design
Businesses will always need visuals. Logos, presentations, thumbnails, brand visuals. The screenshot below is a recent proof that businesses are still looking for designers and you can find these clients in freelancing platforms like Upwork.

But let me say this again, a skill alone is not enough. There’s a place for positioning and communication. Your beginning may look slow but slow does not mean impossible.

Please don’t pressure yourself because of what you see online or start comparing someone else year 5 results to your month 2.

3. Underestimating communication skills.

At first, I thought freelancing was only about skills but No. Communication can make a client keep you even when you’re still improving.

Things like:
Responding professionally
Updating clients properly
Asking questions
Understanding time zones
Meeting deadlines
Clarifying instructions

These things matter a lot. Some freelancers lose opportunities not because they lack skill but because clients struggle to work with them.

One thing that helped me was understanding that foreign clients operate differently. While you’re active in Nigeria, your client may still be asleep. While you’re resting, they’re just starting their workday.

Learning this helped me become more patient, organized and professional.

If you’re just starting freelancing, don’t pressure yourself to look successful overnight.

Many of us started confused.

Many of us learned by making mistakes.

The goal is not to start perfectly.

The goal is to keep growing.

At some point, you have to stop preparing and start practicing. Your first proposal may not be perfect. Your first discovery call may feel awkward. Your first task may make you nervous but do it anyway.

Confidence grows through action, not overthinking.

3 Mistakes New Freelancers Make (I Made Them Too)

Nobody really talks about how confusing freelancing can feel in the beginning. You see people posting dollar payments, client wins, remote work lifestyles and you assume everything happens overnight.
It doesn’t actually. I made these mistakes too.

1. Thinking foreign clients come immediately you start freelancing. This was one of my biggest mistakes, the moment I was done with my VA course that year my mind was already on foreign clients and dollars and because of that, I ignored smaller opportunities around me.
I overlooked local businesses, Nigerian brands, small business owners, people who actually needed help nearby. I thought working with local clients meant I wasn’t succeeding yet.
But I later realized that local clients can help you gain experience, create testimonials and build a portfolio.
Everybody wants international clients but many people don’t want the process that prepares them for those clients.

Your first client may not pay in dollars but they can prepare you for the clients that eventually will.

FB sometimes would share tips for growth but we choose to ignore because everyone thinks they're doing another a favour by commenting meaningfully on their post.
They choose to comment Gbam, Exactly, Good etc. just a one word response as if it's a boyfriend & girlfriend relationship where the guy is no longer interested,
Girlfriend: Babe, how are you doing?
Boyfriend: Fine
Girlfriend: How's your day going
Boyfriend: Good
Girlfriend: This one you're responding like this
Boyfriend: Nothing
......
......
Until they finally ghost you.
