The practice provides players with some attacking transitions that rely on quick forward play in order to take advantage of unbalanced defensive structures.

ORGANISATION:

- Mark out a 70x40m pitch.
- Place a full-size goal at each end of the pitch.
- Mark out a 30x16m area in the centre of the pitch.
- Divide this area into 3 zones with the central zone being larger than the others.
- Divide the players as follows: 7 pink players, 3 green players and 6 orange players.
- Position 5 pink players inside the first zone and 4 pink players inside the third zone.
- Position the 3 green players inside the central zone.
- Position 1 orange player in the first zone and 1 orange player in the third zone.
- Position 2 orange players on the outside of either side of the area.
- Position a goalkeeper in each goal.

EXPLANATION:

- The ball starts with the pink players, who need to pass the ball through the central zone to their team-mates in the other end zone.
- The green team needs to pink, shut off the passing lanes and win the ball back.
- The orange player occupying the zone where the ball is needs to press and try to win it back, too.
- When the green team wins the ball back, they should transition into attack quickly and link up with the orange players.
- At the same time, the orange players outside the area need to become active and join the attack.
- The pink team can leave their respective zones to defend against the attack

VARIATION:

- The pink team can use the goalkeeper as an extra passing option.

COACHING POINTS:

- The team in attacking transition should play forward quickly as soon as they win the ball.
- The orange players outside the area should not switch off and be ready for the counter‑attack, whilst playing on the shoulder and checking the defensive line for offside.
- Ensure good cover and balance when in transition.
- The defending team should identify when to press and when to sit back whilst remaining compact.
- Use intelligent pressing to delay the opposition. By timing and managing the press, the defending team can control where the ball is played, making it easier to identify when to press.
- The defending player closest to the ball carrier should press, whilst the supporting players should provide depth so that the opposition cannot play over the top.

AS THE SEASON NEARS ITS END: THE CASE FOR STRUCTURED TECHNICAL REPORTING IN THE NPFL

By Idris D. Okeke, Director, BinarySports

With just four matchdays remaining in the Nigeria Premier Football League season, attention across clubs is naturally fixed on results, survival battles, and final league positions. However, beyond the immediate pressure of competition lies a critical but often overlooked responsibility, the preparation of a structured end-of-season technical report.

Across many NPFL clubs, one recurring challenge persists: the absence of detailed, data-informed, and insight-driven season reviews. Decisions are frequently based on memory, isolated observations, or short-term outcomes rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s performance across the entire campaign. This gap limits continuity, affects planning, and ultimately slows down technical development.

A structured technical report provides clarity. It allows clubs to objectively assess their tactical identity, performance trends, player contributions, and key weaknesses across all phases of the game, including often neglected areas such as set-pieces and transitions. More importantly, it transforms a season’s worth of matches into actionable insights that can guide recruitment, player development, and tactical adjustments.

At this stage of the season, clubs should not wait until the final whistle of Matchday 38 to begin this process. Preparation must start now, with data gathering, video review, and internal technical discussions already underway. The role of the performance analyst becomes central here, working closely with the coaching staff to structure information into a coherent and usable format.

Equally important is understanding that a technical report is not merely an administrative document. It is a strategic tool. When properly executed, it informs off-season decisions, shapes pre-season planning, and establishes a clear direction for the next campaign.

The reality is simple: clubs that fail to document and analyze their season risk repeating the same patterns. Those that invest in structured technical reporting position themselves to improve with intent and precision.

As the NPFL season enters its final stretch, the question for every technical department is not just how to finish, but how to learn, evolve, and build what comes next.
