Despite a courageous performance, Abdulwahab lost a 5–0 points decision to the more experienced Ugandan fighter.

Nigeria’s Ayomide Hassan Bows Out After Valiant Effort in 70kg Boxing

GLASGOW — Nigeria’s Ayomide Foly Hassan bowed out of the men’s 70kg boxing event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games following a hard-fought Round of 32 bout against Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai.

Despite a spirited and courageous display from the Nigerian fighter, Thai put together a composed, tactical performance to earn a 4–0 victory on points in their preliminary contest.

While the result brings an end to Hassan’s campaign in the tournament, his grit and determination on the international stage reflected the unwavering heart of Team Nigeria.

Refiloe Thai advances to the Round of 16 to continue Lesotho’s challenge in the ring, while Hassan leaves the Games with valuable experience to build on for future international competitions.

Team Nigeria for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Team Nigeria consist six formidable boxers set to represent the nation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Taking place at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, Team Nigeria’s boxing squad features a dynamic blend of seasoned international performers and hungry contenders, competing across three female and three male weight categories.

"Our boxers have put in intense preparation and carry the spirit, grit, and pride of over 200 million Nigerians. We are headed to Glasgow with one goal: bringing back golds."

Women’s Squad
Kadijat Ajishola (Bantamweight – 54kg): Known for her lighting-quick footwork and sharp counter-punching, Ajishola anchors the lighter division.

Blessing Oraekwe (Middleweight – 70kg): A relentless inside fighter with powerful body shots, looking to dominate the 70kg division.

Patricia Mbata (Light Heavyweight – 75kg): Bringing major tournament experience and clinical ring composure to the upper weight class.

Men’s Squad
Abdulramon Abdulwahab (Light Welterweight – 65kg): An explosive, high-volume puncher with exceptional ring vision.

NBF Invites Forty Boxers For Commonwealth Games Camping In Lagos

The technical committee of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has invited Forty-(40) pugilists for the final phase of its 2026 Commonwealth Games open camping in Lagos.

The boxers, which are mostly finalists at the last National Boxing Open Trials held in February, consist of Twenty-(20) male and Twenty- (20) females across all the weight categories.

An official letter of invitation has been sent to the selected boxers, coaches, and other technical members. The camp will open on Friday, May 1st, the same day the pugilists are expected to arrive at the Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah( Rtd) boxing hotel at the National Stadium in Surulere Lagos. The training sessions will commence this Saturday, the 2nd of May .

The Chairman NBF technical committee Babatunde Laguda said the Federation is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the boxing contingent to the Glasgow Games gets the best of preparation.

"The NBF board under the leadership of Hon. Wale Edun has prioritized an early camping for every international event. Hence, the Nigeria Boxing Federation has taken the lead in calling athletes to camp ahead of the Commonwealth Games. "

" This phase of the trials is very crucial because from the Forty boxers we have invited the Ten that will fly Nigeria’s flag in Glasgow Scotland will emerge." Laguda added.

On his part, the vice president Nigeria Boxing Federation Hon. Omonlei Imadu said the Federation will ensure any boxer that made the final list is a medal prospect for the nation as the body’s aim of Ten boxers Ten medals is still very much on course.

"The current leadership of the NBF is always out to correct the narrative, the model for picking athletes for international events has changed under our watch, it's no longer business as usual for the journey men in the squared ropes sports, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has given us a mandate ahead of the Commonwealth Games and to deliver on this we must ensure that the boxers that will consists the final list to Glasgow truly merit their inclusion". Imadu said.

Nigeria will parade Ten-10 boxers at the 2026 Commonwealth Games slated for July 23rd to August 3rd in Glasgow.

NBF Appoints Omo-Agege As Chairman Pro Boxing Committee
As BoxRec, WBC, ABU, Others Disowns NBBofC

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has ratified the appointment of Mr. Azania Omo-Agege as chairman of its pro-boxing committee.

Azania previously served as the vice president of the Nigeria Boxing Federation before taking over as an interim president at the later stages of the former NBF board.
The widely experienced sports administrator also served as the vice president of the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC), where he initiated several reforms to the advancement of the squared ropes sports in the continent.

The NBF board believes Azania’s wealth of experience, both local and internationally, will provide a great deal of knowledge in correcting the ills in pro-boxing activities in the country.

Omo-Agege’s appointment came in the wake of widespread rejection of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) by several international boxing body such as the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, ABU, and BoxRec, the official record keeper of combat sports globally. These reputable international boxing bodies have disowned the (NBBofC) despite a purported approval letter from the National Sports Commission (NSC). They cited knavery activities associated with boxers age falsification, pre-planned fight results, and financial improprieties, amongst other unethical actions.
On this basis, BoxRec and other international bodies have resolved to work directly with the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) as the only institution recognized by law to oversee all aspects of boxing activities in Nigeria.
The NBF said it has become imperative for it to take charge of pro-boxing in the country since professional boxers are now allowed to fight in the Olympics. Any pro boxer with fifteen (15) fights or below is now allowed to compete at the Olympics.

Hence, the Nigeria Boxing Federation have resolved to monitor and generate a proper records for its professional boxers without depending on any external sources for such essentials.The Federation’s leadership praised the National Sports Commission (NSC ) for its strong stance against age falsification and other unethical actions in Nigerian sports.

They appreciate the commission for its support in this critical phase as they further affirmed that the ongoing reforms in Nigerian boxing is in line with the NSC’s Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE) aimed at setting all aspects of the nation’s sports on a progressive trajectory.

The apex boxing body in the country is also of the view that the National Sports Commission may not have been properly briefed on the operations of the (NBBofC) as the law solely recognized the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) as the body to oversee all aspects of boxing in the country.
