Hosts Ghana have ended a 39-year wait for a gold medal at a major African table tennis championship after Israel Aklie and Joanita Borteye captured the U-15 Mixed Doubles title at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Accra.

Parrot Sports Group reports that the Ghanaian pair delivered a memorable performance in front of their home fans, defeating Tunisia's Amori Amine and Ela Saidi to clinch the championship and write their names into the nation's sporting history.

Guided by head coach Robert Amartey, Aklie and Borteye showcased remarkable composure, resilience and tactical discipline throughout the competition before producing their finest display in the final to secure Ghana's long-awaited continental gold.

The victory is particularly significant as it marks Ghana's first gold medal at a major African table tennis event since 1987, when Patricia Offei and Patience Opokuah won the women's doubles title at the All-Africa Games in Nairobi, Kenya.

For nearly four decades, Ghana had come close on several occasions but failed to reach the top of the podium. That long drought finally came to an end in Accra, where the home crowd witnessed a historic breakthrough from the country's next generation of table tennis stars.

Nigeria Bow Out of U-19 Singles as Semi-Final Line-Up Is Confirmed at ITTF Africa Youth Championships

Team Nigeria's impressive run in the U-19 Boys' and Girls' Singles events at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana, has come to an end following the conclusion of the quarter-final matches.

Parrot Sports Group reports that although the Nigerian challenge ended before the medal rounds, the country's young paddlers earned plaudits for their resilience, determination and quality throughout the championship, competing strongly against Africa's finest junior talents.

In the U-19 Boys' Singles, Nigeria's hopes of reaching the semi-finals were dashed after Agunbiade Sultan, Michael Fabunmi, and Kuti Mathew all exited in the quarter-finals.

The results have produced an intriguing semi-final line-up, with Egypt's Gaber Yasin set to face compatriot ElSayed AbdelMalk in an all-Egyptian clash. The second semi-final will feature an all-Tunisian affair as Wassim Essid takes on Essid Amir, guaranteeing both nations a place in the championship final.

In the U-19 Girls' Singles, Uganda's giant-killer Jemimah Nakawala will continue her remarkable title chase against South Africa's Rochica Sunday, who has also impressed throughout the tournament.

The other semi-final will see Egypt's Habiba Elbasoumy face Algeria's Morice Tania, with both players aiming to secure a place in the continental final.
