Your Title Changed. But Did Your communication?

Every now and then, professionals get promoted.

Maybe to manager.
Director.
Principal.

Or they get the opportunity to own a school.

The position changes.
The responsibility changes.

But does the way you communicate change with it?

Leadership demands more than being good at what you do.

You now have to lead meetings, correct people, handle difficult conversations, answer challenging questions and represent your organisation.

And those conversations require a different level of communication.

Your professional competence may have grown.

Your title may have grown.

But your communication, presence and ability to handle high-stakes conversations may still reflect the level at which you previously operated.

That matters.

I call it the Leadership Level Gap:

Your responsibilities can grow faster than your communication.

Your title can change before your voice does.

Has yours caught up?

Have you ever felt that your responsibilities grew faster than your communication?

What changed for you when you stepped into leadership?

You're title changed. Did your communication!

There is a stage in many professionals' careers that nobody that is hidden.

Your responsibilities grow.

But your communication doesn't necessarily grow with them.

You become a principal.

A school owner.

A director.

A manager.

A senior executive.

Suddenly, people are looking to you for decisions, direction and answers.

You are expected to lead meetings, correct people, give difficult feedback, handle disagreement, speak to parents and staff, represent the organisation and sometimes communicate unpopular decisions.

And you may have to do all of that while remaining composed.

But here's the problem:

Professional competence does not automatically produce leadership communication competence.

Being an excellent teacher does not automatically teach you how to lead a difficult staff conversation.

Being a successful professional does not automatically teach you how to communicate at a senior level.

And becoming a school owner does not automatically teach you how to communicate a difficult decision without damaging the relationship.

This is what I call the Leadership Level Gap.

Your professional level has changed.

Your responsibilities have changed.

But your communication habits may still belong to an earlier stage of your career.

It can show up in subtle ways.

You explain too much.

You speak too quickly when challenged.

You struggle to find the right words.

You avoid difficult conversations.

You sound uncertain when you actually know what you want.

Or you become unnecessarily forceful because you're trying to establish authority.

None of these necessarily mean you're a poor leader.

Sometimes, it simply means your communication has not yet caught up with your leadership responsibility.

And that is trainable.

Leadership development should not only teach you what to do.

It should also develop how you communicate while doing it.

Because eventually, people don't experience your leadership through your job description.

They experience it through your conversations, meetings, decisions, responses, voice, presence and behaviour under pressure.

Your title can change before your communication does.

The question is:

Has yours caught up?

Do you think pronouncing this word wrongly by many people is justified?

*Cleanse*

Crazy English I must say

13/08/2026

Some pronunciation mistakes are common even among experienced leaders.

**Cleanse** is one of them.

It’s pronounced

/klenz/

not

kleenz.

Whether you’re talking about data, the body, the skin, or a system, the pronunciation stays the same.

It’s a small detail.
But executive communication is built on precision.

Listen.
Practise.
Refine.
Repeat.

One of the biggest mistakes professionals make is treating confidence as a single personality trait.

It isn't.

You can be:

Confident in your technical expertise.

Uncertain in a boardroom.

Comfortable teaching.

Nervous during networking.

Strong in one-to-one conversations.

Less comfortable speaking to 500 people.

So don't ask:

Am I confident?

Ask:

Where am I confident, where am I not, and what specific capability needs development?

That produces a much more actionable diagnosis.

Speak like the leader you already are.

Did you know that:
2) Failure is an event, not an identity.
2) Confidence grows through recovery, not perfection.
3) Feedback is more valuable than flawless performance.
4) Executive communicators review performance objectively not failure.
5) Learning is the true return on every setback.

They lose them because people don't experience them as the leader they truly are.

The school proprietor whose vision is exceptional yet, struggles to command confidence.

The administrator or principal whose message is heard, but not felt.

The executive whose expertise is undeniable, yet whose influence never matches it.

The entrepreneur with a brilliant solution, but a presence that fails to inspire trust.

Different titles.

One challenge.

Leadership is experienced before it is believed.

Every interaction answers an unspoken question:

"Can I trust this person to lead?"

That judgment is often made before your credentials are discussed.

Before your achievements are recognised.

Before your results are presented.

People don't respond to leaders based solely on what they know.

They respond based on how they experience them.

Your voice.

Your presence.

Your clarity.

Your composure.

Your confidence.

Together, they shape the leadership experience you create.

At The Executive Voice™, we don't simply teach communication.

We help leaders align how they are experienced with the capability they already possess, so they are heard, trusted, respected, and remembered.

Because your voice is not just how people hear you.

It is how they experience your leadership.
