Akindayomi Helped Kumuyi. Deeper Life Exploded.
When Deeper Life began to blossom in the late 70s, Rev Josiah Akindayomi did what most founders today would never do, he opened the RCCG headquarters for Kumuyi’s Monday Bible Study.
He wasn’t scared Kumuyi would “steal his members.”
He wasn’t threatened that he was unlettered while Kumuyi was a first‑class Mathematics valedictorian from UI and a Unilag lecturer.
Akindayomi saw grace, not competition.
He saw kingdom, not territory.
And he let Deeper Life grow right inside RCCG’s own space.
Beyond Kumuyi’s small flat in Unilag, it was Akindayomi’s generosity that gave Deeper Life the room it needed to rise. And rise it did — by 1983, Deeper Life had become the single largest congregation in Africa, overflowing every space it touched.
In those days, RCCG under Akindayomi and Deeper Life under Kumuyi were one stream — holiness inside, holiness outside.
Two movements. One heartbeat.
Final Word
Akindayomi’s open door changed everything. His humility amplified Kumuyi’s early fire.
And history will always remember that Deeper Life’s rise was accelerated because Akindayomi refused insecurity and chose kingdom unity.
