‘‘Hard to put a price on this one, because Newcastle have absolutely no need to sell and, if anything, they need to prove they can stop the flood of players exiting St James' Park. It will take well over £50m, would be my hunch.

There is a view that Hall needs to push to make this happen. United want him, but he needs to be clear to Newcastle that he wants the move to happen. If he does that, then perhaps there will be an agreement, but that is by no means a guarantee. Newcastle can play hard ball and they will.

They have lost star names already and there is a sense of drift there. That's why players like Hall might consider getting out, but it's also why Newcastle have to try and stop the exodus. I think United will try and make the deal happen, but a lot of this is in the hands of the player and the selling club.
