There’s something strangely familiar about this whole Julián Álvarez situation at Atlético Madrid.

And no, I’m not talking about just another player wanting to leave.

I’m talking about Kun Agüero.

Back in 2011, Agüero was one of Atlético’s biggest stars. The Argentine striker had become one of the most exciting forwards in world football, and Atlético rewarded him with a new contract in January.

Agüero finished that season brilliantly, scoring 20 goals and ending the campaign with a hat-trick against Málaga.

Then came the twist.

After signing a new contract only months earlier, Agüero decided he wanted out.

And his preferred destination wasn’t just any club.

Real Madrid.

That was where Atlético drew the line.

They had no intention of allowing their star striker to walk across Madrid and join their biggest rival. Real Madrid had shown interest in Agüero before, but Atlético’s position was basically:

You can leave but you’re not going to Real Madrid.

Eventually, the solution was found in England.
Manchester City came calling, and Agüero left Atlético for around £35 million.

Now look at Julián Álvarez.

Another Argentine striker.

Another Atlético Madrid superstar.

Another player who signed a long-term deal and later decided that he wanted a new challenge.

And once again, the player’s preferred destination happens to be a direct Spanish rival.

Agüero wanted Real Madrid.
Julián wants Barcelona.

And once again, Atlético don’t seem interested in allowing their striker to strengthen a direct rival.

Instead, England enters the picture.

Back then:

Agüero → Real Madrid ❌
Atlético → England ✅
Manchester City → Agüero

And today:

Julián → Barcelona ❌
Atlético → England? 👀
Arsenal → Julián?

Obviously, history doesn’t have to repeat itself exactly. Julián’s situation is not identical to Agüero’s, and we shouldn’t pretend Atlético are following some 15-year-old script word for word.

But the similarities are too striking to ignore.

Same club.
Same nationality.
Same position.
Same desire to leave.

Same refusal to sell directly to a major Spanish rival.And, once again, an English club potentially becoming the escape route.

Football is funny like that.

Sometimes you think you’re watching a completely new story…

Then you look closer and realize you’ve seen the damn movie before. 😭

If Atlético really don’t want Julián at Barcelona, they may have to find another destination.
