Telling Africa’s story with truth, pride, and depth, one culture, one history, one reality at a time.

The Scramble for Africa brought about the changing flags, but never ends there. Colonial conquest brought profound changes, including:
♦️Loss of political sovereignty
♦️Forced labour
♦️Land dispossession
♦️Taxation and economic exploitation
♦️Violence and repression
♦️Disruption of existing political systems
♦️Colonial boundaries that often ignored existing societies and political realities

It's also important to note that colonialism did not look the same everywhere.
The Congo was not Nigeria.
Nigeria was not Senegal.
Senegal was not Ethiopia.

Different powers used different systems, and African societies experienced colonial rule in different ways, some a bit fair, while others with utmost brutality.

So is one continent, we have different colonial experiences, but a shared loss of sovereignty.

On 31 August 1988, Khotso House in Johannesburg, headquarters of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and a major centre of anti-apartheid activism, was devastated by a bomb blast, more than 20 people were injured.

At the time, responsibility was publicly attributed to a right-wing group, but years later, testimony before South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) revealed that the bombing had actually been carried out by apartheid security forces.

Former police commissioner Johan van der Merwe and Law and Order Minister Adriaan Vlok disclosed their involvement, while evidence linked the operation to instructions from the highest levels of the apartheid government.

In 1999, the TRC granted amnesty to Vlok, Van der Merwe and other security officers involved after they made full disclosures about the operation.

Echoes of Strength of our Heroines.
Do These Warriors Still Inspire Today?

The battles ended, and the women were gone, but their stories lingered in our hearts even till now.

♦️Yaa Asantewaa became a symbol of Ghanaian resistance.
♦️Queen Nzinga remains an enduring figure in Angola’s history.
♦️Nehanda Nyakasikana became a powerful symbol of resistance in Zimbabwe.

Today, their names appear in monuments, schools, public memory, literature and popular culture.

But are we remembering these women as they truly lived, or only as legends we have created around them?........ because in truth their greatest legacy was not the battles they fought, it was the courage to challenge a system that said they should remain silent.

Colonial records often remembered African women who resisted as “troublemakers,” “agitators,” or threats to colonial order.

And that was because women were not supposed to fit neatly into the colonial image of the passive African woman
Women organized protests.
Mobilized communities.
Resisted taxes and forced labour.
Protected political and cultural institutions.
And sometimes fought directly.

But many of their stories were poorly recorded, dismissed, or preserved outside official colonial archives.

It's understood that when history is written by those in power, whose voice becomes the footnote?

On 29 August 1848, British forces under Sir Harry Smith defeated a Voortrekker commando led by Andries Pretorius at the Battle of Boomplaats in the Orange River Sovereignty.

The battle followed Britain's proclamation of the Orange River Sovereignty on 3 February 1848, which brought the territory between the Orange and Vaal Rivers under British rule.

After their defeat, Pretorius and many of his supporters retreated across the Vaal River, continuing their opposition to British rule.

During colonialism invasion Africa was not conquered without a fight.

Across the continent, African societies resisted European conquest and colonial rule.

⚔️ Samori Toure fought French expansion in West Africa.
🇪🇹 Menelik II led Ethiopia to victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
✊🏾 The Mahdist movement challenged British-Egyptian rule in Sudan.
🔥The Herero and Nama resisted German colonial rule in present-day Namibia.
👑 Yaa Asantewaa led resistance against British rule in Asante.
🌿 The Maji Maji rebellion challenged German colonial rule in East Africa.

Some resisted militarily, others negotiated, organized, or used political and economic resistance, their outcomes differed, but the message was clear: Africans did not simply surrender their sovereignty.

On 28 August 1879, British forces captured King Cetshwayo kaMpande, ruler of the Zulu Kingdom, at a homestead on the edge of the Ngome Forest following the Anglo-Zulu War.

His capture came after the British victory at Ulundi on 4 July 1879 and marked a major step in the dismantling of Zulu political independence.
Cetshwayo was imprisoned and later sent into exile in Cape Town.

A line on a European map meant little until someone could enforce it.

Europeans did not simply draw Africa's borders in Berlin and instantly take control.

Colonial occupation required:
⚔️ Military campaigns
🤝 Treaties and alliances
🏛️ Colonial administrations
💰 Economic control
✊🏾 Suppression of resistance

African societies fought back, negotiated, formed alliances and sometimes defeated European forces. The Scramble was therefore not just a story of maps and borders, but a process of conquest, negotiation and resistance.
The map was only the beginning.
