DON'T CHASE FAIRNESS. CHASE HEALTHY SKIN.
Your natural skin colour is not a disease. Healthy skin can be any shade.
Focus on skin that is healthy, moisturized, protected, and comfortable—not changing your natural complexion.
Read the ingredients. Check the manufacturer. Avoid unverified products. Know your skin.
Your skin deserves better than hype.
USE SKINCARE PRODUCTS CAREFULLY—AND PROTECT YOUR SKIN BARRIER
Your skin is your largest organ, so what you apply matters. Not every “chemical” is dangerous, and “natural” does not always mean safe. Harsh, counterfeit, poorly formulated, or unsuitable products can damage the skin barrier.
RISKS OF HARSH PRODUCTS
- Irritation and dryness: Fragrances, drying alcohols, and detergents may cause itching, tightness, redness, or discomfort.
- Barrier damage: Repeated irritation can increase sensitivity and moisture loss.
- Fragrance reactions: Burning, swelling, itching, or rashes may mean a product is unsuitable.
- Skin-lightening products: Unregulated products may contain high levels of hydroquinone, mercury, or potent steroids. Avoid unclear ingredients, missing manufacturer details, and “instant whitening” claims.
- Homemade mixtures: Lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste, and undiluted essential oils can irritate or burn skin.
- Steroid creams: Unsupervised use may cause thinning, stretch marks, acne-like eruptions, and visible blood vessels.
Stop using any product that causes a reaction and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
CHOOSING SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Look for products that are:
✓ Gentle and suitable for your skin type
✓ Clearly labelled and properly formulated
✓ Made by a reputable company
✓ Purchased from a reliable source
✓ Free from known irritants
✓ Within their expiry date
For dry or sensitive skin, fragrance-free products containing petrolatum, glycerin, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, colloidal oatmeal, or dimethicone may help.
PLANT-BASED OPTIONS
- Shea butter: Helps soften skin and reduce moisture loss.
- Jojoba oil: A lightweight liquid wax that moisturizes and softens.
- Argan oil: Helps condition and soften skin.
- Rosehip oil: Popular in skincare but may irritate some people.
- Aloe vera: May soothe skin when properly formulated.
- Colloidal oatmeal: Can help relieve dryness and mild irritation.
- Sunscreen: Helps protect against sunburn, premature ageing, and worsening pigmentation.
IMPORTANT
Natural products can still cause irritation or allergies. Patch-test new products and stop if you develop burning, itching, redness, swelling, or a rash. Avoid applying essential oils undiluted.
If you have eczema, psoriasis, persistent acne, rashes, or ongoing discolouration, consult a healthcare professional.
