I came across this post and I just nodded my head in pity for the person being talked about because this is what I’ve always advocated a*ga*inst.

Dear 9 to 5 worker, hear me and please hear me well.
9 to 5 is not bad, but how you handle it will either make you or mar you. (I discussed this in my new book - "Certificate in the bag, cash in hand), ensure you get a copy.

So, while you're trying to survive and earn a salary to pay your bills via a 9 to 5 setting, start on time to plan for your retirement and your personal establishment.

Start that side business/brand without wasting time even while you're working.

Don't wait until you have clocked 10 or 15 years or more in active service before you realize yourself.

Because if you go through 9 to 5 casually, you will wake up one day and realize that you've spent a decade and even more and all you lived for was just to survive. In fact you were even suffering, living an average lifestyle, feeding from hand to mouth, managing your salary, little or no reasonable savings, zero investment, while working your 9 to 5, so why not plan ahead for a better life for yourself and loved ones.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Do you know that; 5% of 10 million naira (commission) is better than N50,000 (salary)?

This brings us to the Salary vs. Commission dichotomy.

This dichotomy is not just about income, but about life philosophy:
Salary = “I trade time for money”
Commission = “I earn based on value/results”

In reality, the most successful people often blend both:
A base salary + commission (common in sales roles)
A job (salary) + side hustle (commission-based income)

What Should You Choose (Especially as a Young Nigerian)?
Given the current economic realities:
Start with salary for stability (especially during NYSC or early career)
Gradually build commission-based skills:
*Sales
*Digital marketing
*Freelancing
*Business

The goal is to transition from fixed income → performance-based income → asset-based income

Final Thought
Relying only on salary can limit your growth, while relying only on commission without skill can be dangerous.

The smartest path is:
Use salary for survival, and commission for wealth creation.

What to do if you're in the wrong Career Path

1. Don’t Quit Immediately
Start exploring alternatives first

Build skills on the side

2. Identify What You Actually Like
Look for:

*What you enjoy doing naturally

*What people compliment you for

*What you can learn quickly

3. Transition Gradually
*Learn a new skill

*Start a side hustle

*Test before switching fully

4. Move Towards the Digital Economy
It offers:

*Flexibility

*Income opportunities

*Low entry barriers

Biggest Mistake to Avoid
✅Jumping from one career to another without clarity.

That keeps you stuck in confusion

Major Reason;
Being in the wrong career is not failure—it’s feedback.

The real mistake is:

*Ignoring the signs

*Staying stuck out of fear

👉 If you feel:

*Drained

*Disconnected

*Unmotivated

consistently, not occasionally…
then it’s time to re-evaluate your path.
