PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
These conditions are being driven by urbanization, reduced physical activity, processed food consumption, stress, smoking, alcohol use, and aging populations.
Increasing fiber intake is one of the most effective and underutilized ways to help prevent many of the rapidly increasing chronic illnesses in Nigeria and across Africa.
Fiber is not a magic bullet, but it can play a significant role in reducing the risk of:
* Type 2 Diabetes
* Obesity
* Hypertension
* Stroke
* Coronary Artery Disease
* Chronic Kidney Disease (indirectly through better blood sugar and blood pressure control)
* Breast Cancer (some evidence suggests a modest risk reduction)
* Colorectal Cancer
How fiber helps
1. Improves blood sugar control
* Slows digestion and glucose absorption.
* Reduces blood sugar spikes after meals.
* Helps lower the risk of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.
2. Supports weight management
* Increases fullness and satiety.
* Can naturally reduce calorie intake.
* Helps with long-term weight control.
3. Improves heart health
* Soluble fiber helps lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
* May contribute to lower blood pressure.
* Reduces cardiovascular disease risk.
4. Feeds beneficial gut bacteria
* Certain fibers act as prebiotics.
* Gut bacteria produce compounds that reduce inflammation and support metabolic health.
5. Improves bowel health
* Promotes regular bowel movements.
* May reduce the risk of colorectal diseases.
Good Nigerian and affordable fiber sources
* Beans
* Cowpeas
* Bambara nuts (okpa)
* Oats
* Chia seeds
* Flaxseeds
* Fruits (apples, oranges, pears, guava)
* Avocado
* Vegetables (ugu, spinach, okra, garden eggs)
* Sweet potatoes
* Unripe plantain
* Whole grains
* Popcorn (air-popped)
How much fiber?
Most adults should aim for about:
* Women: 25–30 g/day
* Men: 30–38 g/day
Unfortunately, many people consume less than half of this amount.
Recipe;
Pure cocoa powder
Cinnamon
