Most people pay everyone else before they pay themselves.

Rent? Paid.
Bills? Paid.
Subscriptions? Paid.
Food? Paid.

Then whatever is left becomes your ā€œsavingsā€ that’s if anything is left at all.

If you want to build wealth, you have to flip that habit.

Pay yourself first.

The moment your income comes in, move a percentage into investments or savings before spending on anything else. Treat your future self like the most important bill you have.

You don’t build wealth with leftovers. You build it with intention.

Even if it’s just 5% of your income today, start there. Your future self will thank you.

Tell me, how much of your income do you pay yourself first?

Sorry I’m posting this a little late šŸ˜… but the August Federal Government Savings Bond is still open, and the rates are ok though they dropped a bit from what they gave us last month.

šŸ“Œ 2-Year Bond: 13.96% per annum
šŸ“Œ 3-Year Bond: 14.96% per annum

You lend money to the Federal Government, earn interest every 3 months and get your full capital back when the bond matures.

No daily market drama. No checking your phone every five minutes to see whether your investment has ā€œcrashed.ā€ Just steady, government-backed returns.

The subscription window is still open but it closes August 7, 2026, so you still have a few days to decide.

And the minimum investment is just ₦5,000. So please don’t tell me you don’t have enough money to start investing.

If you have been asking, ā€œWhere can I put my money that is very safe and still earn returns?ā€ this is worth considering.

You can subscribe through the Afrinvest 2.0 app or any of the approved stockbroking firms.

Drop your questions below šŸ‘‡šŸ¾ and I’ll answer them.

This is one of the reasons I don’t advise people to do Ajo and group contribution schemes.

I understand that it can help you build saving discipline and access a lump sum of money. But when large amounts are involved, trust alone is not enough.

Many informal contribution groups have no proper structure, no legal protection and no clear system for handling defaults or recovering money when something goes wrong.

You may know the people involved. They may be colleagues, friends, neighbours or members of the same community. But familiarity does not guarantee that your money is protected.

Before joining any contribution group, ask:

• Who is holding the money?
• Where is the money being kept?
• Is there a written agreement?
• What happens if someone stops contributing?
• What happens if the person coordinating the group cannot pay?
• How do you recover your money if something goes wrong?

Also, remember that traditional Ajo is primarily a saving arrangement not an investment. In many cases, your money is simply moving from one person to another without earning any return.

If you are saving towards a goal, consider regulated options where your money is properly documented, monitored and will even earn returns. Plus we have systems now that can help you with that discipline you are looking for.

Have you ever participated in an Ajo or contribution group? What was your experience?

I can’t believe we are already in August. It feels like we were just saying ā€œHappy New Year,ā€ and now we’re already counting down the months left in the year.

Before we get carried away with new month goals, fresh plans and everything August has in store, I wanted to pause and say welcome especially to everyone who recently joined this community.

Hi, I’m Anne šŸ‘‹šŸ½

I’m a Chartered Accountant, with an MBA in Finance and Investment and over a decade of experience in banking and insurance.
But beyond the titles, I’m simply someone who is passionate about helping everyday Nigerians understand money, make better financial decisions and build wealth without feeling like investing is only for ā€œrich peopleā€ or finance experts.

My goal is to make money and investing easier to understand, more relatable and more accessible, one conversation at a time.

Welcome to August! May this month bring us more wisdom, more opportunities and more financial wins. ā¤ļø

Every time money enters my account, there’s a battle. šŸ˜‚

Spend it?
Or invest it?

These days, investing wins more often than not cos I’ve learned that every naira I invest today is one less naira I’ll have to work for tomorrow.

Your salary is not just for surviving the month, it is also for building the life you’ll thank yourself for later.

What’s the first thing you do when your salary drops?
Spend it
Invest it
Pay bills first

Be honest in the comments. šŸ˜„

If I could beg every Nigerian to do just one thing, it would be this:

Invest!

I’ve seen too many people work hard for decades only to struggle financially when the salary stops.
Hard work is important.
But hard work without investing often leads to regret.

Don’t let your income end with your salary.
Build assets.
Own investments.
Create wealth that keeps working even when you don’t.

Because that day will come, when you’ll be grateful you didn’t leave your future to chance.

Your children deserve opportunities.
You deserve financial freedom.
And both start with the decisions you make today.

Even if it’s ₦10,000 a month.
Even if you feel like it’s too late.

Start.
Time is the one asset you can never recover.

Every year you delay investing is another year your money misses the opportunity to grow.

Your future is quietly depending on today’s choices.

We all have moments that completely change the way we think about money.

Sometimes it’s watching someone else’s experience.
Sometimes it’s seeing your first investment return.
Sometimes it’s realizing you’re not the only one trying to figure things out.

Building wealth rarely happens because of one big decision. It happens because of hundreds of small, intentional choices made over time.

Don’t let social media convince you that everyone else is miles ahead. Focus on your own journey, keep learning and keep investing in your future. Your consistency today is creating the life you’ll thank yourself for tomorrow.

šŸ¤” Which of the three moments in this video resonated with you the most? Or was there another experience that completely changed the way you see money? I will love to hear your story in the comments. Please share so others can learn too.
