🚨 Manchester United’s collapse at Old Trafford is simply unacceptable.

United raced into a commanding 2–0 lead against Brighton, putting themselves in the perfect position to control the game and secure a crucial victory.

But instead of finishing the job, United completely lost control. Brighton fought their way back into the match, exposed United’s weaknesses, and eventually came from behind to win at Old Trafford.

Throwing away a two-goal advantage at home in this manner is a serious warning sign. The team’s inability to manage a game after taking the lead raises major questions about the mentality, tactics, and direction of the squad.

At this point, Manchester United may need to make the difficult decision of reconsidering Michael Carrick’s position before the situation gets even worse.

This is Manchester United at Old Trafford. A 2–0 lead should not turn into a defeat. Something has to change. 🔴

United fans, what do you think? Is Carrick still the right man to lead this team? 👇

🚨 THIS IS THE XI I BELIEVE CAN BEAT BRIGHTON! 🔴🔥

Manchester United face Brighton & Hove Albion tonight at Old Trafford in a Carabao Cup third-round knockout, and with United desperately needing a positive result, I believe Michael Carrick needs a team that combines experience, creativity, energy and enough quality to control the game.

My predicted 4-2-3-1 lineup could give United exactly that.

Carrick has already stressed that United need to get back to winning football, while Brighton arrive with plenty of confidence after their recent results. 

🧤 DARLOW — A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF

Karl Darlow gets the nod in goal.

This could be an important opportunity for him to show Carrick that he can be trusted when called upon. The key will be composure, especially when Brighton try to press United and attack quickly.

🛡️ MAZRAOUI — YORO — MARTÍNEZ — SHAW

This is where the lineup becomes particularly interesting.

Noussair Mazraoui provides defensive experience and can help United build from the back.

Leny Yoro brings pace and athleticism alongside the experience of Lisandro Martínez. Martínez's aggression and ability to step into midfield could be extremely useful against Brighton's attacking movement.

And if Luke Shaw is fit enough to start, his experience and quality on the left could give United another outlet going forward. Shaw has been close to a return, although his availability has been a question heading into the match.

⚙️ MOUNT & SANTOS — THE ENGINE ROOM

This could be the biggest surprise in the lineup.

Mason Mount and Andrey Santos would give United a midfield combination of movement, energy and technical ability.

Santos can provide physicality and defensive coverage, while Mount can move between the lines, press Brighton and support the attack.

The objective should be simple: don't allow Brighton to dictate the tempo.

Brighton have been one of the more dangerous attacking sides this season, so United cannot afford to give them easy possession and time around the box.

🎯 MBEUMO — BRUNO — RASHFORD

Now this is where I believe United can seriously hurt Brighton.

Bryan Mbeumo brings pace, direct running and the ability to attack defenders one-on-one.

Bruno Fernandes remains the creative heartbeat. Give Bruno space between Brighton's midfield and defence and he can unlock the game with one pass.

Then you have Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has an exceptional Carabao Cup record, with 24 goal involvements in 25 appearances in the competition, according to Brighton's official preview. He has also produced 15 goal involvements in his last 11 Carabao Cup appearances at Old Trafford.

That makes him a major attacking weapon tonight.

🔥 SESKO LEADS THE LINE

And finally, Benjamin Šeško.

This could be the perfect type of game for him.

With Bruno supplying chances, Mbeumo stretching the defence and Rashford attacking from the opposite side, Šeško would have the opportunity to occupy Brighton's centre-backs and attack crosses and through balls.

His movement could also create space for Bruno, Rashford and Mbeumo to exploit.

🔴 WHY THIS XI CAN CAUSE BRIGHTON PROBLEMS

The biggest advantage of this lineup is balance.

It doesn't simply throw attacking players onto the pitch.

It has:

Defensive experience: Martínez + Shaw
Youth and athleticism: Yoro + Santos
Midfield creativity: Mount + Bruno
Pace: Mbeumo + Rashford
A focal point: Šeško

And importantly, there is enough quality across the pitch to compete with a Brighton side that has shown it can score goals.

Brighton have also won four of their last five away games against United in all competitions, so Carrick cannot afford to underestimate them.

🚨 THE KEY: START FAST!

United cannot allow Brighton to settle into the match.

The first 15–20 minutes should be about intensity, pressing and attacking with purpose.

Win the midfield.

Move the ball quickly.

Get Rashford and Mbeumo running at the full-backs.

Get Bruno between the lines.

And get Šeško into dangerous positions.

If United can score first, the entire complexion of the game changes.

🏆 THIS IS A KNOCKOUT GAME

There is another reason this match is so important.

There is no second chance tonight.

Lose and United are out of the Carabao Cup.

United have already had an inconsistent start to the season, with two wins, one draw and two defeats across their first five competitive matches.

That's why this isn't simply about reaching the next round.

It's about momentum, confidence and getting Manchester United back into the habit of winning football matches.

Carrick has acknowledged the need to balance squad management with the priority of winning, saying United are going into Wednesday trying to win the game.

And with this XI, I believe United would have the ingredients to make Brighton uncomfortable from the first whistle.

🔥 MY VERDICT

If Carrick can get this team playing with intensity, control the midfield and give Bruno, Rashford and Mbeumo enough freedom to attack, this lineup has the quality to dominate large periods of the match and put Brighton under serious pressure.

But Brighton are not going to simply surrender. They have already shown this season that they can score heavily and punish defensive mistakes.

So United need to be aggressive without becoming reckless.

This is my XI. 🔴

Darlow; Mazraoui, Yoro, Martínez, Shaw; Mount, Santos; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Šeško.

Now tell me:

🔥 WOULD YOU START THIS XI AGAINST BRIGHTON?

YES or NO? 👇

Manchester United vs Brighton: Carrick MUST NOT Rotate! 😱 One Mistake and United Are OUT! 🔴🚨

🔴 Manchester United Must NOT Rotate Against Brighton — Carrick Needs a Result Now

Manchester United face Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, September 16, and Michael Carrick has a major decision to make.

Does he rotate heavily and give several youngsters an opportunity?

Or does he trust his strongest available players and make winning the priority?

For me, this is not the night for heavy rotation.

Manchester United need a result.

They need confidence.

They need momentum.

And most importantly, they need to start building the habit of winning again.

🚨 UNITED'S START TO THE SEASON HAS BEEN FAR FROM IDEAL

Manchester United have played five competitive matches this season and have won only two:

❌ Hull City 2–0 Manchester United

✅ Manchester United 5–2 Ipswich Town

🤝 Everton 2–2 Manchester United

✅ Manchester United 4–0 Sabah

❌ Manchester United 0–1 Manchester City

That leaves United with two wins, one draw and two defeats from their opening five competitive matches.

And although the 4–0 Champions League victory over Sabah showed what this team can produce, the league form remains a concern.

United are coming off a painful 1–0 defeat to Manchester City, and the loss came after a controversial VAR decision that was subsequently acknowledged by Pro Ref as an error.

But regardless of the circumstances surrounding that defeat, the message from Carrick himself is clear:

United need to start winning games.

And Brighton is the next opportunity.

🏆 THIS IS A KNOCKOUT GAME — THERE IS NO SECOND CHANCE

This is the biggest reason Carrick should be extremely careful with rotation.

The Carabao Cup is not a league fixture.

If you lose, you're out.

There is no opportunity to collect a point.

There is no second leg.

There is no chance to make up for the result next weekend.

The winner of Wednesday's tie progresses to the fourth round, while the loser leaves the competition.

And Brighton are not the type of opponent United should underestimate.

In fact, Brighton arrive at Old Trafford after destroying Coventry 5–0 in their most recent match. Their recent run also includes a 3–4 defeat to Chelsea and a 1–1 draw with Leeds.

This is a serious Premier League opponent.

This is not a game for Manchester United to experiment.

🔥 CARRICK SHOULD MAKE WINNING THE PRIORITY

There is nothing wrong with giving young players opportunities.

There is nothing wrong with rotating when the schedule demands it.

But there has to be a balance.

And right now, United need something more valuable than simply giving minutes to inexperienced players:

They need confidence.

A convincing victory over Brighton could completely change the atmosphere around the squad.

Imagine United starting strongly.

Scoring first.

Controlling the game.

Getting Old Trafford behind the players.

And eventually winning comfortably.

Suddenly, the conversation changes.

Instead of talking about two defeats in five games, supporters are talking about a team beginning to recover.

That's what this match represents.

⚠️ BRIGHTON HAVE ALREADY SHOWN THEY CAN HURT UNITED

There is another reason Carrick should take this fixture seriously.

Brighton have won four of their last five away matches against Manchester United in all competitions, according to Brighton's official match preview. Their most recent Old Trafford victory came in a 2–1 FA Cup win last season.

That statistic should immediately eliminate any thought of taking Brighton lightly.

This isn't an opponent United can simply put away because they're playing at home.

Brighton have already demonstrated that they can come to Old Trafford and win.

So Carrick needs his players switched on from the first whistle.

🧠 CARRICK MUST GET THE BALANCE RIGHT

There is an important distinction here.

I'm not saying Carrick should play exactly the same XI that started against Manchester City.

That's not necessary.

He can rotate intelligently.

Give one or two players a rest.

Bring in players who need minutes.

But don't change half the team and expect the same level of understanding and intensity.

The spine of the team should remain strong.

Players such as Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha give United experience and quality in important areas.

If Carrick keeps enough of his senior players on the pitch, he can introduce younger players without putting the entire responsibility on them.

🚀 UNITED NEED THEIR ATTACKING PLAYERS TO RESPOND

This is also a game where United's attacking players need to make a statement.

Bruno Fernandes has already shown that he can produce decisive moments.

Mbeumo offers pace and directness.

Rashford can stretch Brighton's defence.

Cunha can link the attack together.

And if Benjamin Sesko gets an opportunity, this is exactly the type of match where he can make an impact.

The objective should be simple:

Attack Brighton from the beginning.

Don't allow them to settle.

Don't give them confidence.

Don't allow them to dictate the tempo.

Make them defend.

🔴 OLD TRAFFORD NEEDS A PERFORMANCE

This is perhaps the most important part.

United have just lost a Manchester Derby at Old Trafford.

The players now have an opportunity to give the supporters something to celebrate.

And this is where the mentality of the squad matters.

A strong opening 15 minutes could completely change the atmosphere.

The supporters want to see urgency.

They want to see players fighting for every ball.

They want to see United playing forward.

And they want to see a team that looks desperate to win.

Carrick has to make sure his players understand that.

👶 WHAT ABOUT THE YOUNG PLAYERS?

This is where I would be careful.

Young players can absolutely play.

But I wouldn't throw several youngsters into the starting XI at the same time.

Imagine a team filled with inexperienced players trying to deal with Brighton's pressing, movement and attacking transitions.

If things go wrong early, the pressure becomes enormous.

Instead, Carrick can introduce younger players gradually.

Get the result first.

Then give them minutes when the game is under control.

That's a much safer way to develop them while still protecting the team's immediate objective.

🚨 AND THERE IS ANOTHER REASON NOT TO PANIC

United's injury situation means Carrick doesn't have unlimited options.

Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton are unavailable, while Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw have been among the players being monitored for potential returns.

That makes squad management even more important.

Carrick shouldn't rotate simply for the sake of rotating.

He should rotate where necessary.

There's a difference.

🔥 THIS IS ABOUT STARTING A NEW RUN

Manchester United don't need another beautiful explanation.

They don't need another week of discussing missed opportunities.

They need results.

They have already experienced defeat against Hull City and Manchester City.

They have drawn with Everton.

They have beaten Ipswich and Sabah.

Now Brighton represents another opportunity.

And because this is a knockout competition, winning is the only result that guarantees progression.

Carrick knows the pressure.

He knows United need to respond.

And he knows a victory could give the entire squad a psychological lift heading into the next Premier League fixture against Fulham.

So my message to Michael Carrick is simple:

Don't underestimate Brighton.

Don't over-rotate.

Don't gamble with the Carabao Cup.

Play enough of your strongest team to control the match.

Get the result first.

Then worry about everything else.

Because right now, Manchester United don't need another setback.

They need to start winning again.

And Wednesday night at Old Trafford is the perfect opportunity to begin.

Should Michael Carrick play his strongest available XI against Brighton, or should he heavily rotate and give the youngsters a chance?
