Yesterday at Reggies 🐢 An unforgettable sighting as a leatherback turtle came gliding up from the depths right at the end of our dive. The leatherback is the largest sea turtle, reaching up to 2 m long and over 600 kg. They can live 40+ years, travel entire oceans in search of jellyfish, and are sadly vulnerable to extinction. They're back!!! After a brief absence, whale sharks have returned to Tofo! Over the past three days, there have been consistent sightings of several whale sharks.
The volunteers of identified MZ-772 - an individual last photographed in Tofo's waters back in September 2020. Did you know? Every whale shark has a unique pattern of spots around its gills, much like a human fingerprint! This allows researchers to track and identify these gentle giants over the years.

Honeycomb in the ocean 🍯 We encountered this beautiful honeycomb stingray on a recent dive to Giant's! One of the largest stingrays in the Indo-Pacific, their disc can reach up to 2 metres and their total length can exceed 4 metres! Don't you just love nature's designs?!

We were particularly lucky to see this one move about as they are usually nocturnal.
Did you know? They can grow over 3m long, breathe through their open mouth and have poor eyesight. Also, they are true fish (not snakes or so)!

Turtle Hatchlings Make Their Journey to the Sea! 🌊🐢
This week, turtle hatchlings emerged from their nests close to Tofo Scuba!
Unfortunately, artificial lights nearby confused them, because hatchlings instinctively follow the brightest light to find the ocean. Normally, they move toward the natural glow of the moon and stars over the sea, but bright lights on land can mislead them.
Thanks to quick action, we were able to safely collect 16 baby turtles alive (and sadly, 3 had already passed) and release them at sunset with the lights off. Every single one made it safely into the ocean!
This amazing experience reminds us how sensitive sea turtles are to light pollution and why protecting their nesting beaches is so important. It’s always incredible to see nature’s instincts at work.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped ensure these hatchlings reached the ocean safely!
