Digital Internet Association Malaysia (iaM) has released a statement announcing the successful conclusion of the Sabah Smart School IoT Hackathon 2026 (SSSIH26), marking its second year running strong in Sabah! π
π Over 200 young innovators from 6 districts came together for one incredible journey π²πΎ
From Kunak to Kota Kinabalu, more than 200 students took part, building, innovating and problem solving with AI & IoT, centred on the themes of Smart City, Smart Agriculture and Smart Tourism ππΎποΈ

And we are not stopping here. Registration for the National Level Smart School IoT AI Hackathon 2026 (NLSSIoTAI26) opens in the second week of July, open to schools nationwide!

This project takes flood preparedness to the next level an upgraded early-warning system built on ESP32 and IoT, now enhanced with camera monitoring and solar power for real-time, sustainable flood detection in vulnerable communities. By combining resilient hardware with smart connectivity, Team SMKKJ TEC 2.0 has shown how young Sabahan innovators can turn climate challenges into opportunities for community-driven solutions. SMART BIN takes waste management from passive to proactive a smart recycling bin equipped with material and level sensors, where the lid only opens for the correct waste type and automatically alerts the authorities for collection once it's full. By blending IoT with everyday civic infrastructure, Team TREE has shown how young Sabahan innovators can solve community challenges with elegant, practical engineering. Their victory reflects the spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan and the Sabah Digital Economy Blueprint, where smart technology meets sustainability to build cleaner, more efficient communities even in Sabah's most rural districts.

REVIVE CITY reimagines recycling as something people want to do a smart system powered by Arduino, QR-code identification, a mobile app, and a cloud database that turns every bottle, can, and carton into reward points. By gamifying sustainability, Team ESTRAX has shown how young Sabahan innovators can nudge entire communities toward cleaner habits one scan at a time. Their victory reflects the spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan and the Sabah Digital Economy Blueprint, where smart technology meets circular economy thinking to build a greener, more resilient Sabah.

Crowned 1st Place Champion of the Sabah Smart School IoT Hackathon 2026 (State Edition) with their innovative project, Smart Coral AI πͺΈπ€
Smart Coral AI tackles one of Sabah's most pressing challenges, food security in coastal communities through a floating smart agriculture system that integrates hydroponics, aquaponics, solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and IoT, with AI monitoring for crop disease and nutrient levels. Team BLEU's work demonstrates how local innovation can deliver real, scalable solutions to local problems. Their victory aligns closely with the goals of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan and the Sabah Digital Economy Blueprint, both of which position digital transformation as a driver of sustainable, inclusive growth.
