Dr. Murat Sümer (The Nippon Foundation Assistant Professor in International Maritime Law / Coordinator of Academic Affairs, IMLI) delivered a presentation at the WMU Maritime Affairs Conference 2026 in Malmö. His presentation entitled “Search and Rescue in the Era of MASS: The Duty to Render Assistance at Sea” formed part of the Conference’s Session 3 under the topic of “Maritime Digitalization I”.

The final session of the joint ITLOS-FAO-IMLI Workshop, entitled “Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources and the Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Fisheries Disputes,” is a Roundtable Discussion. This concluding session is providing participants with an opportunity to exchange views, insights and experiences based on their professional expertise, both with the distinguished members of the Roundtable Panel and with fellow participants.
The discussions offer a valuable opportunity to reflect on the key themes addressed throughout the Workshop and to foster an open and constructive exchange of perspectives on the sustainable use of living marine resources and the settlement of fisheries disputes.

Judge Ida Caracciolo (Judge, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) and Judge Konrad Jan Marciniak (Judge, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) are currently delivering presentations in Workshop 4: Fisheries Cases before the Tribunal of the ITLOS-FAO-IMLI Workshop entitled “Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources and the Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Fisheries Disputes” being held at IMLI. Judge Caracciolo’s presentation is focused on "The Tribunal’s Advisory Opinion on IUU fishing”, whilst Judge Marciniak is speaking on "Fisheries Disputes (including the Southern Bluefin Tuna Cases and the Swordfish Case)”.

Mr. Nikiforos Panagis (Legal Officer, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) and Dr. Ximena Hinrichs Oyarce (Registrar, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) are currently delivering presentations during Workshop 3: Proceedings before the Tribunal: Jurisdiction and Urgent Proceedings of the ITLOS-FAO-IMLI Workshop entitled “Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources and the Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Fisheries Disputes” being held at IMLI. Mr. Panagis’s presentation focused on the "Prompt Release of Vessels and Crews”, whilst Dr. Hinrichs Oyarce spoke on "Provisional measures under the Convention”.

Judge Tomas Heidar (President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea [ITLOS]) and Judge Kriangsak Kittichaisaree (Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea [ITLOS]) are currently delivering presentations in Workshop 3: Proceedings before the Tribunal: Jurisdiction and Urgent Proceedings of the ITLOS-FAO-IMLI Workshop entitled “Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources and the Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Fisheries Disputes” being held at IMLI. Judge Heidar is presenting an "Overview: The Settlement of Disputes under Part XV of the Convention and the Role of ITLOS." Judge Kittichaisaree is speaking on "The Jurisdiction of the Tribunal with regard to Fisheries Disputes."

Dr. Matthew Camilleri (Secretary, FAO Agreement on Port State Measures, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and Dr. Buba Bojang (Legal Officer, FAO Development Law Service — LEGN, FAO) are delivering presentations during Workshop 2: Combating IUU Fishing of the ITLOS-FAO-IMLI Workshop entitled “Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources and the Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Fisheries Disputes”. Dr. Camilleri’s presentations are entitled "Preventing, deterring and eliminating IUU fishing” and “Linkages with RFMOs and other treaties (BBNJ Agreement, WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, etc.)”. Dr. Bojang’s presentation is entitled " Rights and responsibilities of States (flag State, port State, coastal States and market States)”.
