Some clients come for the famous places. Others come because they want to explore what hasn’t been explored yet.

was one of those rare clients, genuinely eager to step off the beaten path and explore some of North Macedonia’s unknown chalk streams and remote mountain waters, where even we still have plenty left to discover.

This trip took us high above the tree line, through an alpine landscape of wildflowers, butterflies and limestone cliffs, searching for the rumoured big brown trout holding in the deeper pools of a remote canyon.
We didn’t find the big fish we were looking for. Instead, we found ourselves facing a brutal hike, steep cliffs and terrain where fishing sometimes felt more like climbing than fishing.

But that’s exactly what made the day special.
For us as guides, these are the clients we love having, people who are willing to explore, take the hard walk, accept that the fish aren’t guaranteed, and appreciate the place itself as much as the catch.

The little “landlocked” brown trout of these high-altitude streams are something truly special, isolated above the limestone escarpments where the river disappears underground and springs back to life further downstream.

A wild place, a difficult adventure, and a client who was happy to go looking for something unknown.

That’s the kind of fishing we love to share.

July and August are a great time to fish the Treska River through Matka Canyon. Half-day or full-day trips, right on the doorstep of the city — fly fishing, wild river, and good company with Fly Fishing Macedonia guides and clients.

Hosting a Danish couple on Podgorecko Glacial Lake, high in Mount Jablanica. Heavy wind, wild fish, and some serious battles.

The fish won this one 10:1 — many big ones lost in the weeds or cut off on the sharp rocks.

Already developing a better strategy for the next visit.

Wild lake trout at their best.

Because of how much time we spend on the Treska River, and the consistently healthy fish population this freezing river still holds, we decided to start a monthly summary posting practice from Matka Canyon — its emerald waters practically part of the capital city, making it the most visited fishing terrain of what we call the “Urban Fly Fishing Tour” near Skopje.

Since the opening of the season one month ago, we’ve shared the river with fellow fly fishermen from neighboring Serbia, hosted by our colleague and1 guide , as well as guests from the UK, Norway, USA and many more.

Good company, beautiful water, and days spent targeting the endemic Macedonian brown trout (Salmo trutta macedonicus), some rare Salmo trutta macedonicus/farioides hybrids, and even a few giant rainbow trout hiding in the canyon.
