UEFA on the new Champions League format
UEFA says the new Champions League format is sports-first, not driven by marketing. The goal is to increase competitiveness and unpredictability.
Extra match weeks were added partly to meet broadcaster needs, especially to avoid long breaks in January when TV subscriptions matter most.
The new system creates more high-stakes matches, higher goal importance, and dramatic final rounds, which boosts excitement.
Commercially, the format is a success: revenues are up over 25%, even before the first matches were played.
TV rights remain the core income source, and competition among broadcasters benefits UEFA.
UEFA will never stage official Champions League matches outside Europe. Match times will always prioritize European fans.
Future changes won’t affect the competition format much; focus will be on content distribution and monetizing beyond the 90 minutes.
If you want it even tighter like a headline-style brief, say the word 📝⚽
