Most young players aren’t struggling because of technique.

They’re struggling because the game is moving faster than their understanding.

I was thinking about this recently while revisiting a coaching book on developing intelligent footballers. It took me back to a player I once worked with, technically excellent, always wanted the ball, but he would have games where he kept giving possession away.

The ability wasn’t the issue.
Decision-making was.

That’s when I started thinking more deeply about what actually makes a footballer intelligent on the pitch.

Over time I began to see five key areas that influence it:

• Game Awareness
• Decision Speed
• Composure Under Pressure
• Courage
• Technical Ex*****on

When one of those pillars is weak, performance becomes inconsistent.

I’ve written a deeper blog post about this, including a real example of how I worked with a player to develop these areas and why I believe involvement, is what really develops intelligent footballers.

It's over with 1st leg. Over with excuses and blame games. We welcome a new era. The moment to correct our past is highly knocking.
