A fortnight or so ago, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the 59th Graduation Ceremony at NIS — and I use the word "pleasure" with full sincerity, which, is saying something.
As has become something of an annual tradition, I left thoroughly impressed by the latest class to join the ranks of NIS Alumni. This year's valedictorian and salutatorian addresses (four in total, because apparently excellence refused to be rationed this year) were thoughtfully woven around a theme of core values; values quietly instilled in these graduates over the course of their time at NIS, whether that was a couple of seasons or the better part of a formative decade.
Now, were some of the aspirations and dreams expressed entirely unfamiliar to those of us who sat in those same seats some decades ago? No. The world, it seems, remains something young people are determined to change (while amassing riches along the way). But what struck me — genuinely — was the maturity, the confidence, and the quiet readiness with which this class carries themselves. They are not merely ready for what comes next. They appear to have already begun writing their next chapters.
I find myself unreservedly proud to share an alumni community with them, and equally proud of an institution that continues, year after year, to send young people out into the world properly equipped; intellectually, morally, and hopefully with at least a passing familiarity with how to write a formal email.
Congratulations, Class of 2026. The alumni ranks are better for having you. 🎓

It was a great turnout! Day wasn't too hot, didn't rain, and the crowds were great.

Some things at NIS have changed a lot over the years… and some things somehow still feel exactly the same. 😊
From the old gym area to the tennis courts that became the East Building… from the “upper parking lot” days of the ELC to the Raymond Building still standing proudly as the heart & soul of NIS — every corner of campus seems to hold a memory for someone.
And yes… for longtime Dolphins, that parking lot was once a basketball court. 🏀
We thought it would be fun to share this little “now and then” panoramic look at the front of NIS today (well… a few days ago 😄).
What’s your strongest memory of these spaces? Which version of NIS do you remember?

Latest Alumni Spotlight: An alumni's journey from the hallways of NIS to a restored farmhouse in rural Nagano. Yumi (1983) took some time to talk to us about her time at NIS and the winding road that took her around the world to reviving a traditional Japanese kominka into a B&B and café.
