The Supreme Court of India’s landmark judgment delivered on July 29, 2026 in Vanashakti vs Union of India has brought much-needed clarity to one of the most debated issues in environmental regulation: the fate of projects that commenced without obtaining prior Environmental Clearance
The judgment preserves Parliament’s role to legislate on such violations, while upholding the separation of powers.

Recently, an article highlighted an important but often overlooked aspect of bauxite mining — bauxite-bearing plateaus can act as natural “water sponges”, absorbing rainwater and gradually releasing it through springs, streams and rivers.

Dimethyl ether (CH₃OCH₃, or DME) is rapidly emerging as a premier, clean-burning alternative and blending agent for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
India currently imports roughly 60% - 65% of its household LPG. Replacing just 8% of these annual imports with domestically synthesized DME saves nearly Rs. 9,500 crore in foreign exchange.

National Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). The authority approved four major wildlife conservation projects aimed at protecting endangered species in India.
Projects Approved
1. River Dolphin
Preparation of a Conservation and Recovery Action Plan.
Focus: Protect habitats, reduce accidental deaths in fishing nets, control river pollution, and improve population monitoring.
Species: Primarily the Gangetic River Dolphin, India’s National Aquatic Animal.
2. Project Snow Leopard – Phase II
Launch of the second phase of Project Snow Leopard.
Includes the second nationwide population estimation of snow leopards.
Focus: Habitat conservation in the Himalayas, community participation, and scientific monitoring.
3. Indian Rhinoceros
Approval of a Conservation Action Plan.
Focus: Prevent poaching, expand habitat, strengthen protected areas, and improve genetic diversity.
Species: The Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, found mainly in Assam and parts of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
4. Wild Water Buffalo
Adoption of a Pan-India Conservation Approach.
Focus: Protect remaining wild populations, prevent hybridization with domestic buffaloes, restore habitats, and improve connectivity between populations.
