How Can a Consistent Player Outperform a More Talented Player?

Coach Dr. SP Yadav explains in this video why consistency can take a player further than talent alone.

Talent is undoubtedly important in cricket, but talent without discipline, consistency, hard work, and continuous improvement may not be enough to reach the higher level.

A consistent player can eventually move ahead of a more talented player because:

* Consistency creates continuous improvement — the player works on weaknesses regularly instead of relying only on natural ability.
* Discipline builds strong habits — regular practice, fitness, recovery, and preparation become part of the player’s routine.
* Consistency develops match temperament — repeated exposure to pressure helps the player make better decisions in difficult situations.
* A consistent player learns from mistakes — instead of making excuses, they identify the problem and work on correcting it.
* Coachability becomes a major advantage — a player who listens, accepts feedback, and applies corrections can improve much faster.
* Mental strength develops over time — consistent players learn how to handle failure, pressure, competition, and setbacks.
* Performance becomes more reliable — at higher levels, coaches and selectors need players who can perform repeatedly, not occasionally.
* Long-term commitment beats short-term talent — talent can provide an early advantage, but consistent effort can close the gap and eventually create a bigger advantage.

The Key Message

Talent can give you a head start, but consistency determines how far you can go.

A naturally talented player who trains irregularly may be overtaken by a player with slightly less natural ability but greater discipline, work ethic, consistency, learning ability, and mental toughness.

“Don’t depend only on how talented you are. Build the habits that make your talent perform consistently.”

Shot Ex*****on Against Leg Spin with Patil from 🏏

Shot Ex*****on on Leg Spin | Batting Skill Development Session with Saanvi Patil from USA under Dr SP Yadav

Facing a leg-spinner requires strong basics, good reading of the ball, quick footwork, and the ability to adjust according to the line, length, and amount of spin. In this session, Coach SP Yadav focuses on building Saanvi’s fundamentals for playing both off-side and on-side shots against leg spin.

🔹 1. Reading the Leg Spinner

Before playing the shot, the batter should carefully observe:

* The bowler’s wrist position and release
* Line and length of the delivery
* Amount and direction of spin
* Whether the ball is pitching full, good length, or short

The objective is to read the ball early and make the correct movement rather than deciding the shot too late.

🔹 2. Basic Footwork

Good footwork is the foundation against spin.

For a full delivery:
Move the front foot towards the ball and get close enough to play with control.

For a shorter delivery:
Transfer the weight quickly onto the back foot and create enough space to execute the shot.

The head should remain stable and the body should move towards the line of the ball.

🔹 3. Playing on the Off Side

Against leg spin, off-side options can include:

* Cover drive
* Square drive
* Late cut
* Cut shot
* Inside-out shot

For an off-side shot, the batter should:
watch the ball → move the feet → get into position → keep the head over the ball → extend the hands through the shot.

Avoid reaching away from the body. The best control comes when the feet and body are positioned correctly behind the ball.

🔹 4. Playing on the On Side

On-side options include:

* Straight drive
* On drive
* Flick
* Leg glance
* Sweep

For these shots, the batter needs good alignment of the head, front shoulder, front leg and bat path. The wrists should work naturally rather than forcing the ball.

Against a leg-spinner, the batter should particularly avoid playing across the line too early, because the ball can turn and create an outside edge or lbw/bowled opportunity.

🔹 5. Batting Principle Against Leg Spin

The most important rule is:

“Move with the ball, not against the ball.”

Don’t premeditate the shot. Let the line and length of the delivery decide the shot.

A technically strong batter should be able to:

* Attack a loose/full delivery
* Defend a good-length delivery
* Use the crease intelligently
* Go back to short balls
* Rotate the strike
* Maintain balance after every shot

🎯 Key Benefits of This Drill

This type of drill helps develop:

✅ Better shot selection
✅ Footwork against spin
✅ Balance and body alignment
✅ Head position
✅ Bat control
✅ Off-side and on-side options
✅ Reaction and decision-making
✅ Confidence against quality leg spin

Coach SP Yadav’s focus is not just on hitting the ball—it is on developing the correct movement, position, balance and decision-making so the player can reproduce the technique under match pressure.

When a Player Focuses Less on Training and Starts Making Excuses

When a player stops focusing seriously on training, skill development, discipline, and self-improvement and starts giving excuses to parents after every mistake in a match or training session, it can create serious long-term problems.

Major नुकसान for the Player

1. Accountability decreases
The player stops accepting responsibility for mistakes and starts blaming the pitch, coach, teammates, equipment, umpire, or other circumstances.
2. Skill development becomes slow
Instead of asking, “What should I improve?”, the player starts asking, “Who is responsible for my failure?” This mindset directly affects technical development.
3. Learning from mistakes stops
Mistakes are an important part of cricket development. If every mistake is covered with an excuse, the player loses the opportunity to identify and correct the real problem.
4. Confidence becomes dependent on excuses
Genuine confidence comes from preparation and improvement. Excuse-making creates temporary protection but does not build real confidence.
5. Discipline gets weaker
The player may gradually become less punctual, less consistent in practice, and less committed to fitness and skill sessions.
6. Performance plateaus
A talented player can remain at the same level for years if he or she does not honestly evaluate weaknesses and work on them.
7. Competitive opportunities can be lost
At higher levels, selectors and coaches look for players who are reliable, disciplined, coachable, mentally strong, and willing to take responsibility—not just talented players.

नुकसान for Parents

Parents can also unintentionally become part of the problem if they accept every excuse without questioning it.

* They may start blaming coaches, teammates, or selection systems instead of identifying the player’s actual development areas.
* They may spend significant time, money, and effort without seeing corresponding improvement.
* The player can become dependent on parents to defend every failure instead of learning to handle challenges independently.
* Parents may unknowingly create a victim mindset: “My child is talented, but others are responsible for his/her lack of success.”

The Biggest Danger

The biggest danger is not losing one match. The real danger is developing a mindset that prevents the player from improving.

A healthy player should learn to say:

“I made a mistake. Why did it happen? What can I do differently next time? Let me work on it.”

That attitude creates accountability, resilience, discipline, confidence, and long-term performance.

Coach SP Yadav’s Message

Talent may give a player an opportunity, but attitude, discipline, hard work, accountability, and continuous skill development determine how far that player can go.

Parents should support the player emotionally, but they should not protect the player from every consequence of his or her mistakes. Sometimes the best support is to make the player take responsibility and work harder.

🏏 Improving the On-Drive with an Advanced Batting Drill

SP Yadav is working with talented -based player Yug Kukreja on his on-drive through an advanced batting drill, focusing on improving his overall body setup and front-leg positioning.

A key focus of this drill is getting the front-foot toe to land straight in the intended line of the on-drive.

Benefits of the Front-Foot Toe Landing Straight

1. Better Body Alignment – Helps align the front foot, hips, shoulders, and head toward the intended on-drive line.
2. Improved Balance – A well-positioned front foot provides a strong and stable base while transferring weight forward.
3. Better Weight Transfer – Allows the batter to transfer body weight smoothly from the back foot onto the front foot.
4. Improved Bat Swing Path – A straight front-foot position can help create a more controlled and efficient bat swing through the line.
5. Better Head Position – Encourages the head to remain closer to the line of the ball, helping the batter maintain control and timing.
6. Improved Shot Control – Helps the batter control the direction of the on-drive rather than relying only on hand movement.
7. Better Balance After Contact – A stable front leg helps the batter remain balanced after playing the shot and prepares them for the next ball.
8. Reduces Unnecessary Movement – Proper front-foot alignment can prevent the body from falling excessively across or away from the ball.

🎯 Key Coaching Point

“Front foot to the line, head over the ball, stable base, smooth weight transfer, and full bat extension.”

The objective is not simply to force the toe into a particular position, but to create a balanced and repeatable body setup that allows the batter to play the on-drive naturally and efficiently.

Advanced drill work by Coach SP Yadav with Yug Kukreja — developing technique, balance, alignment, timing and consistency in the on-drive.
