This summer vacation I have spent a half of every Tuesday teaching the teens Ninjutsu group at the dojo of shihan Miky Rosner in Haifa. I wanted to focus on two main subjects which are Randori (freestyle practice) and how we learn.
On Randori I've tried to cover a few questions I've been encountered over the years and l think everyone who's practicing should think about - what is the definition of Randori in Ninjutsu practice, in what it is different from other martial arts, what are the mental states we should strive to be in when practicing Randori, what are the physical intensities we should use, and more.
On the technical front I tried to answer the question how to learn a new movement or technique that we encounter, what are the different components, layers, and levels that are required to integrate while practicing a new technique, how do we learn techniques we cannot drill in their original form (for the safety of the Uke), what is the importance, or the idea, of learning a technique in different "modes" - for example static vs dynamic, and then to break the dynamic practice to levels, layers and components of practice.
I’ve tried to transfer all the principles through the techniques I've taught. I feel lucky to encounter such a wonderful group of students who possess the habits of great practitioners. I had a fun and meaningful time teaching. It was a good summer.
