Kenmare Athletic Club

Great results today at the Jerry Kiernan 5K Road Race in Listowel.

With a very competitive field and a fast pace from the front, Kenmare AC athletes put in some excellent performances.

Bobby Tangney finished in 17:13.

Patrick O’Connor Mason came agonisingly close to breaking the 20-minute barrier, crossing the line in 20:03.

Joanne Tangney continued her excellent progress with a new 5K PB, finishing in 26:10.

Well done to all three on their performances. A great race and great conditions, making for an enjoyable evening of racing. Definitely one to put on the calendar again next year.

Well done Ray Smith , 1st M60 on the Donoughmore 7 mile road race.

The hugely talented Tadgh O’Donoghue from Kilgarvan has for too long been the forgotten man of Kerry athletics.

Born in February 1952 in Rathmore, as Timothy, the son of Paddy and Margaret (nee Cronin) was the eldest of six children. The O’Donoghues were railway people while the Cronins were farmers. His father was one of 10 children and the oldest hardly knew the youngest! It was the way of the time.

Around 1967, a teacher in Tadhg's school, Seán O’Sullivan, from Beara, was national champion in the triple jump. O’Sullivan started organising athletics in the school and Tadgh joined in. He was soon on his way to the Munster Schools’ championships in Rockwell and came second. The winner was Niall Cusack, future Olympian and Boston Marathon winner.

Then Tadgh entered the Farranfore road race on St Stephen’s Day and found himself ahead of a runner whom he had never competed against before, a certain Jerry Kiernan from Listowel, who finished second to the Kenmare man on the day. A unique medal was presented to him, and he discovered that the medal had been sent from the US by a local hero, Tom McCarthy

Congratulations to former clubmate Laura Hallisey on a fantastic PB, Joanne Tangney on a new PB, and Jenny Smith, who continues to improve with every race.

And Ray Smith was back under 19 minutes, so some really good results all round.

Kenmare Athletics Club – Busy Few Weeks of Racing!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for our members, with plenty of racing action around Kerry and Cork.

Following the Adrigole race on Saturday, Jenny Smith, Joanne Tangney, Paul Keville, Margaret Collins and Ray Smith all took on the Banna race.

Ray then headed to the Kilgobnet 4 Mile on Friday evening, before Jenny Smith and Ray Smith travelled to West Cork for the Sherkin Island Do Run Run.

The racing continued on Tuesday evening, when Patrick O’Connor Mason and Ray Smith lined out in the West Muskerry 5K in Macroom.

The action doesn’t stop there, with a number of club members set to take part in the Rose of Tralee 5K Road Race tomorrow morning.

Well done to everyone who has been representing Kenmare AC over the past few weeks, and best of luck to all those racing in Tralee

Well done to Éabha on winning a silver medal with the Kerry County team in the National League Final in Morton Stadium today. Éabha scored maximum points for the team winning the 1500m walk. A great result for the girls who have been so close to the podium the last few years
