It’s the diabetes community, research and events like these that keep us going with T1D💙

What a moment to sit in a room full of other people with diabetes, watching the everyday lives of people living with it in Imperfect Days alongside the research that continues to push the needle forward.

From the heartfelt and honest stories of Carmel, living with T1D, and Tony, living with T2D, to the uplifting moments from 12-year-old Faye and her mum Karen ★·.·´¯`·.·★ Insulin Girl ★·.·´¯`·.·★ .

It was the real, unfiltered lived experience of diabetes.

The imperfect days and everything in between.

I also had the chance to speak about embracing the imperfections of T1D — how being imperfect is perfectly okay.

There were exhibitors, new research, connection, tears, laughter… and plenty of beeps. 😂 All part of this messy, beautiful life with diabetes.

It creates a ripple effect. It helps all of us keep living, surviving and thriving.

A cure may not yet be within our grasp, but the diabetes developments, research, technology and community make life with T1D a little less heavy and a little more manageable. 💙

Stay tuned for it to air on RTE 1 Nov 19th!!

Big shoutout to Thriveabetes for bringing us together for the event and everyone involved including the cast, doctors, researchers and those behind the project:

Type 1 diabetes teaches us to chase perfection in how we manage it 24/7.

Food. Exercise. Glucose numbers. Everything in between.

It’s easy to think that good diabetes management means getting it right all the time.

But there’s no straight line with diabetes — or life.

You don’t need to make Type 1 diabetes perfect. Make space for the imperfections so you can live a messy, full, beautiful life. 💙

Tomorrow I’ll be talking about embracing the imperfections of Type 1 diabetes with Abbott at the Imperfect Days documentary screening in Ennis.

Grab your tickets Thriveabetes or via link in my bio. Hope to see you there! 💙

T1D coaching tidbit - instead of adding in more rules to managing diabetes, add in more confidence. That means trusting yourself more in managing your condition.

This trust allows you breathing room to just get on with type 1 diabetes and feel lighter. ☁️

So if type 1 diabetes took up less headspace, what would you do⁉️

For me, I’m grabbing a pain au chocolate pastry from 🍫 😋 (and pre bolusing)

Type 1 diabetes can feel really heavy at times. 💙 And we all have those imperfect days.

On Sat, Sept 19, Imperfect Days is coming to Ennis for a special diabetes documentary screening. It brings together research, clinical trials and real lived experience of T1D.

Plus afterwards, there will be a community conversation with people involved in the film. You’ll get to check out the diabetes tech exhibition and other local diabetes businesses.

What’s the best part is the chance to connect with other T1Ds, share your stories and leave feeling a little less heavy and a lot more encouraged.

I’ll be there too, sharing a little of my own T1D experience. I can’t wait! 🥰

📅 Saturday 19 September
⏰ 10:30am–2pm

You made it to Friday with T1D and time to just recognise that you kept going through it all. 💙✨

Some days you feel really gung ho about managing your type one diabetes. And other days you’re just getting by with it.

That’s the different between surviving with type 1 diabetes and thriving with it.

Check in with yourself and diabetes to see what it is you need to support you to move forward without the heavy exhaustion and burnout.

Maybe it’s a little tweaking your insulin regimen, maybe it’s altering your food throughout the day, maybe it’s connecting with other T1Ds or maybe it’s getting diabetes tech to better support you.

Tell me honesty - are you managing T1D today or just getting through it? 💙

This doesn’t look like a “diabetic plate…” And honestly what is a diabetic plate supposed to look like⁉️

These are some of the foods I ate while travelling through Spain and Italy this summer.

Pizza. Pasta. Paella. Pastries. Tapas. Limoncello. All the yummy things you might expect from there.

For a long time, I used to restrict myself from food for fear it would send my glucose crazy. Because most of our conversations around diabetes and food can feel like a list of what you shouldn’t eat.

Don’t eat this.
Too many carbs.
That’s not diabetic-friendly.
You can’t have that.

But I don’t believe living well with T1D means restricting your way through life.

It means learning how to balance your food with confidence. And sometimes that means adding something to your plate rather than taking something away.

Adding protein
Adding fibre
Adding vegetables
Being mindful of portions
Thinking about timing
Understanding the carbs in your meal
Using your diabetes tech

It doesn’t mean every meal has to be perfectly balanced or missing out on the foods and experiences that make life delicious!

I want to think about carbs without being afraid of them - like pizza or gelato.

Not perfection.
Not restriction.
Not “good” or “bad” food.

Just learning how to make diabetes fit into your life — rather than making your life fit around diabetes. 💙💙

When life with type 1 diabetes gets so busy you forget to take off your old CGM sensor. Does this happen to anyone else?

With all of life’s chaos and businesses and then throw managing type 1 diabetes into the mix, it’s a LOT.

Lately life here has been a LOT.

A family death, summer activities, my mom over from overseas combined with a trip abroad, trying to check off the back to school checklist and all the other life stuff.

Sometimes diabetes takes a back seat. It’s not intentional it’s just the twists and turns and ups and downs of life.

Here’s one really important thing that I have learned when managing T1D when big life events and grief happen….

Number 1️⃣ - be KIND to yourself!!!!

Your glucose numbers are not a reflection of how well you manage your diabetes through these events.

Plus this specific life experience has not been written in a book on how best to manage your diabetes through it. And that’s why you have to be adaptable and leave room for a bit of “not-in-range” moments.

By no means am I saying just forget about T1D. It’s more like try to find ways that it doesn’t dominate during these times and give compassion to yourself in those moments that it spiked for what seems no reason.

Stress, trauma, grief and tiredness can impact T1Ds more. So bring in kindness and extra time to cope with it all.

Thank you to diabetes tech for making this a little easier 💙
