O’Callaghan’s Mills Parish notes
Hurling
O’Callaghan’s Mills Senior Hurling team will contest the county Senior Hurling relegation semi-final because they were defeated by Clooney-Quin in round 3 of the County Senior Hurling Championship played at Sixmilebridge on Saturday August 22nd. The missing of a number of goal scoring opportunities proved costly in this knock out game and Clooney-Quin won a score line of 1-21 to 0-12. The Junior C team came from behind to secure a draw with the Banner Club on Friday August 21st at Wolf Tones GAA Grounds Shannon in round 2 of the County Junior C Championship on a score line of 1-18 to 3-12.
Meanwhile the Intermediate Hurling team were defeated by Ogonnelloe in round 3 of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship at Scariff GAA Grounds on Sunday August 23rd on a score line of 2-12 to 0-12.
Camogie
Kilkishen Camogie Club Junior C team defeated St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield in round 2 of the County junior C Camogie Championship played at O’Callaghan’s Mills GAA Grounds on Saturday August 22nd. Final score was 0-8 to 1-2.
Meanwhile the Intermediate Camogie team will travel to Crusheen on Friday August 28th to play Crusheen in round 2 of the County Intermediate Championship.
Under Age Hurling
The O’Callaghan’s Mills under 13 Hurling team defeated Smith O’Brien’s in the under 13B Shield final at Hamilton Park Kilkishen on Friday evening August 21st on a score line of 7-6 to 1-10.
Scariff Bay Community Radio
The board of Scariff Bay Community Radio would like to thank the people of O’Callaghan’s Mills, Kilkishen and Oatfield for their generour contribution to the recent Church gate Collection. Coverage in the area will be greatly improved in the coming weeks as new transmitter will broadcast from Glenadree which is 1,000 meters higher than the present transmitter in Knock James, Tulla.
Heart Screening
There was a great turn out of members and local residents for the heart screening Day held in the GAA Clubhouse at Hamilton Park Kilkishen on August 15th. The screening was conducted by Advanced Medical Services which helps to prevent Adult Sudden Death Syndrome. The GAA Club Committee wishes to thank the club Wellness Officer Caroline Hickey for organising the event.
Recent Death
The death has occurred of John Torpey Belvoir, Sixmilebridge. Co. Clare. Predeceased by his daughter Melissa, his brothers Michael and Christopher and his parents Mary and Michael.
John will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Mary, his children Patricia, Pauline, Connie, Claire, Karol and Sean, his sons-in- law Tom, Jimmy, Michael, Shane and Brian, his daughter-in-law Michelle and his many grandchildren Aoife, Croídhe, Méabh, Gillian, Susan, Ella, Finn, Gwen, Pearse, Nichola, Emma, Paul, Jim, Faye and Robyn.
He is also sadly missed by his brother Patrick, his sisters Margaret, Lena, Fran and Mary and his many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
John’s remains were removed from his home in Belvoir to St Senan’s Church Kilkishen after requiem mass burial took place in Clonlea Cemetery. Huge crowds attended on the evening at his residence and at St Senan’s Church and Clonlea Cemetery. Members of O’Callaghan’s Mills GAA Club and the East Clare Golf Club provided a guard of honour for the removal from the church to the cemetery.

O’Callaghan’s Mills Parish notes
Hurling
O’Callaghan’s Mills Senior Hurling team will play neighbours Clooney-Quin in round three of the County Senior Hurling championship at Sixmilebridge on Saturday August 22nd at 2pm. It is a knock out game for O’Callaghan’s Mills as a win would put them through to the County Quarter Final. A draw or a win would put Clooney Quin through.
The Intermediate team will also have a round 3 championship game against Ogonnelloe at Scariff GAA Grounds on Sunday August 23rd at 5pm. Meanwhile the Junior C team were defeated by Bodyke in the opening round of the group stages of the Junior C Hurling Championship at Broadford on Monday evening last August 10th on a score line of Bodyke 3-17 to 0.17. The Junior C team play the Banner Club Ennis in round 2 on Friday August 21st in Wolf Tones GAA grounds Shannon at 6.45pm. Also former O’Callaghan’s Mills member and player Mickey McMahon was wing forward on the Clare team in New York who contested the New York Senior Hurling Final in Gaelic Park New York against Tipperary. Tipperary were the victory on the day on a score line of 3020 to 1-17.
Camogie
Kilkishen Camogie team were defeated by Eire Óg Ennis in the first round of the county Intermediate Camogie Championship at O’Callaghan’s Mills GAA Grounds on Friday evening August 14th. One point separated the sides at the final whistle, EireÓ 2-11 to Kilkishen 1-13. The sides were level 1-7 each at half time. Kilksihen will play Crusheen in Crusheen in round 2. Meanwhile the Junior C team played a draw with Parteen Meelick on Saturday August 15th at Parteen in the opening round of the County Junior C Championship on a score line of 4-4 to 2-10.
Under Age Hurling
The O’Callaghan’s Mills under 13 Hurling team recently defeated Doora-Barefield in the county Under 13 C Academy final played at Hamilton Park, Kilkishen recently. Meanwhile the Under 11 panel travelled to Semple Stadium Thurles for a hurling Blitz and wo their five games. Hopefully this is the first of many days on the big stage for these boys.
Scariff Bay Community Radio
Scariff Bay Community Radio will broadcast Saturday Chroncile live from Craggaunowen Heritage Centre from 10am to 12 noon. The guests include Mark Donnellan leader of the Tulla Ceili Band, who are celebrating 80 years on the road, Angela Collins O Mahoney formerly of Kilkishen on her steeple Jack Business, Joe Queally Coora Historian and fundraiser for the RNLI and Siobhan O’Sullivan from Quin Heritage Group who recently launch a new app for visitors to Quin Abbey. Tune in on 92.7FM or online.
Membership Draw
O’Callagahn’s Mills GAA Club members sraw for June and July were held in the clubhouse at Hamilton Park, Kilkishen on Monday last August 10th. The following are the winners for June; Eamon Taaffe, O’Callaghan’s Mills, David McGrath O’Callaghan’s Mills and Michael Baker O’Callaghan’s Mills. The July winners were Lloyd Adams O’Callaghan’s Mills Trevor Skehan Kilkishen and John and Ciara Cooney O’Callaghan’s Mills,
Recent Death
The death recently occurred of Hans-Jörg Assmann, Annaghneal, O'Callaghans Mills and Worbswede, Germany. Predeceased by his sister Edith. Much missed and remembered always by his sisters Ruth and Ingrid, his nephews, niece, great nephews and nieces, extended family, good neighbours and friends both here, and in Germany. His funeral took place myths Funeral home, Feakle followed by private cremation.

We fondly remember John using his hurling making skills to ensure he was invisible on the hurling field during our Gathering celebrations of 2013!!!
