Newtown Celtic 2-0 Electro Celtic

Ballinagh lit up under the lights on Tuesday night as Newtown Celtic produced a superb second-half performance to defeat Electro Celtic 2-0 at their home ground.

It was a fiercely contested Division 3 encounter from the first whistle, with both sides matching each other in intensity and physicality. Every tackle was competed for, every second ball battled over, and neither team gave an inch in what was a very evenly matched contest.

Newtown's back line stood tall throughout, with Dean Fay delivering a fantastic defensive display. Time and again he read the game brilliantly, won crucial challenges, and helped keep Electro Celtic at bay during their best spells of possession.

In midfield, captain Shane Finnegan was immense. He battled for every ball, broke up attacks, and drove his side forward with a tireless work rate that set the tone for Newtown throughout the night.

Out wide, Daniel Olude was a constant outlet, causing problems with his pace and energy, while Ciaran Harrison led the line superbly, working tirelessly, holding up the ball, and putting relentless pressure on the Electro Celtic defence.

The turning point arrived in the 64th minute when Cian Mulligan was introduced from the bench. His impact was immediate.

Just minutes after coming on, Peter Donohoe rose highest to flick a perfectly judged header into Mulligan's path, and the substitute kept his composure before slotting a wonderful finish into the goalkeeper's bottom right-hand corner to give Newtown a deserved 1-0 lead.

With Electro Celtic pushing for an equaliser, Newtown struck again in the 82nd minute with a goal worthy of winning any game. Seanie Martin did brilliantly to retain possession before driving a dangerous ball across the box. Evan Fox intelligently recycled the attack, laying the ball back into Mulligan's path. The substitute cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a stunning curling effort into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with absolutely no chance.

A big 3 points which keep Newtown in the race for promotion. 💚🤍

Newtown came out 2:1 winners in the reverse fixture recently in a tight game that could have went either way. The lads will be hoping to get another 3 points on the board to help push them into the title race.
