Typhoon Bavi has passed and we rise and rebuild again. And yesterday’s sunset was a reminder that while life in the Marianas is sometimes tough is also amazing and beautiful.

Why did our ancestors go through the trouble of elevating their houses above the ground when it required so much effort to make the latte stones? We know it was to cool their homes, to protect from earthquakes and from invaders. We also know it was to help protect the family from flooding.

The statue of Maga’låhi Kepuha in Hagåtña, the third to occupy that spot since the 1970s is still standing after both typhoon Sinlaku and Typhoon Bavi.
Maga’lahi Kepuha remains one of the most famous Chamorus from the ancient period because of his role in supporting the Spanish priests establish a presence in Guam. His legacy was more complicated than simply welcoming the Spanish. He also argued with the priests and his family fought against them after his death, allying with Maga’låhi Hurao.
Former Governor Ricky Bordallo, chose Kepuha to be immortalized in a statue following Typhoon Pamela because he represented not only a link to Chamorus from the past, but also the ability for Chamorus to navigate and negotiate changing events and forces around them.
