Environmental corrosion
A little about the rigging part appearance, protection and corrosion that becomes a failure.
Stainless steel parts escpecially for the marine industry come from materials that are very resistant to corrosion.
The resistance to corrosion is a property they stainless steels have to form a micro skin of protection.
This is the result from oxygen reaction to the metal and is called Chrome passivation.
In terms of corrosion resistance is an absolute protection.
As everything in life nothing is permanent.
Even the highest quality and the highest polishing will not last forever.
Ferritic particles are carried in the air, in cases of polluted air the concentrations can increase dramatically.
Once the particles get attached the create a hole in the stainless skin and corrosion begins.
Areas that keep humidity and salts are much more prone to accelerate the process.
Once the skin is destroyed the stainless steel is not as much stainless as before.
The solution is cleaning and polishing at yearly interval base.
This is the only way to protect the rigging parts in tact.
Have in mind that rigging parts are not all made from 300 series (316L etc) but also more exotic metals
That does not considered stainless. The corrosion on these metals is many times faster than stainless stee as there is
No chrome passivation process.
Cleaning and polishing increase the lifespan of your rig and keeps the integrity of the metal.
Some cases environmental corrosion can create a non reversible situation.
In conjuction with electrolytic corrosion we can talk for corrosion progress within days.
Keep everything clean and inspected and they will serve you for many years.
