Rugby Rising Play Greater Accra Festival 🏉

On 1st April, the Rugby Rising Play Greater Accra Festival successfully held in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, brought together over 350 girls in a powerful celebration of sport, education, and empowerment.

The program focused on developing young girls through rugby, promoting confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership both on and off the field.

Reproductive and menstrual health sessions were delivered by Victoria N. Mensah (Public Health Nurse) and Stella Odoom from Gbawe Health Centre, equipping participants with essential knowledge on personal health and informed decision-making.

The rugby session was led by Rachel Ankomah, alongside Samira Mensah and Moses Agbenu, providing an engaging and practical introduction to the game.

The event was supported by Matilda Clottey (Municipal Sports Director), as well as dedicated teachers including Dankyi Ernest Owusu, Isiffu Musah, Suleman Baba, Michael Bansar, and Teddy Pokoo, highlighting strong institutional support.

Special thanks to Coach Collin for the generous donation of kits and equipment to the schools.

Overall, the festival successfully combined rugby, health education, and community collaboration to empower the next generation of girls.

Rugby Rising Play Ghana: 350 Girls Reached in Greater Accra

On 27 November 2025, the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) in collaboration with the Greater Accra Rugby Association successfully hosted the Rugby Rising Play at Weija Asaa Park, introducing 350 girls from 11 schools to rugby, mentorship and essential health education.

Highlights

Rugby Skills Sessions:
GRFU development coaches led fun, non-contact rugby activities, including passing, movement drills, teamwork exercises and safe-play demonstrations.

Health & Empowerment Education:
Patricia Atsufi Akakpo from Weija and Gbawie Clinics delivered an engaging session on teenage pregnancy, menstrual hygiene, self-care and confidence-building. The girls participated actively and asked thoughtful questions.

Support for Girls’ Wellbeing:
Participants received sanitary pads from Sunda International Ghana and KIVO gari products to support menstrual health and encourage continuous participation in school and sport.
