Challenge with Empathy

Leading in the impact sector comes with a particular kind of pressure — high stakes, stretched resources, and a mission you care about deeply. That combination can make it hard to find space to just think.

The best coaching doesn't just make you feel good — it makes you a better leader. Clients across the charity, NGO and development world often describe the balance I try to strike: real empathy, paired with honest, direct challenge. Someone clearly on your side, who won't just tell you what you want to hear.

As one NGO leader put it: a coach who's "on my side but wants to challenge me." Another described it as having "a critical friend" — someone who helps surface the blind spots that are hard to see from inside a mission-driven organisation.

That's the sweet spot: a confidential space to be candid, and enough challenge to genuinely shift how you think and lead — even amid competing priorities and constant change.

If you're leading through change in the charity, development, health or education sectors and want that kind of space, I'd love to talk.

Confidence & Clarity

Ever feel like you know the answers, you just need space to think them through?

That's one of the things clients tell me again and again about coaching: it's not about being told what to do. It's about having a trusted space to talk things through, get challenged with the right questions, and come out the other side with real clarity on what matters most.

One client put it simply: coaching gave her "the space to talk through challenges" and helped her "develop plans to overcome them." Another said it helped him "re-find confidence" in his abilities at a pivotal career moment.

If you're navigating change, a new leadership role, or just feel like you're too "in the weeds" to think strategically — that's exactly where coaching helps.

Get in touch if you'd like to explore what that could look like for you.

For charity leaders I'd add Compassion Fatigue - You’re constantly exposed to others’ suffering, pouring emotional energy into helping, which can leave you drained and detached over time.

What to do - Practice emotional boundaries and regular renewal. Create space to recharge by engaging in activities unrelated to charity work, seek peer support, and remember that caring effectively requires caring for yourself first!

‘If one more person says how calm and capable I am, I might actually cry.’

A leader I worked with recently told me, ‘If one more person says how calm and capable I am, I might actually cry.’
From the outside, she looked rock solid — leading a big mission, keeping the team steady, always ready with the right answer.
Inside, she was exhausted. She didn’t feel like she could show it to anyone — not her team, not her board, not even friends. She felt like if she cracked, the whole thing might unravel.

When we started working together, the first thing we did was give her a space where she didn’t have to be ‘on.’ No judgment, no pressure — just somewhere she could finally lay it all down.
We explored what she actually cared about — not just what the job demanded. We reset her boundaries so she could protect her energy without guilt. We built small, practical ways for her to show up with presence again, not just push through.

By the end of three months, she told me, ‘I feel like I’ve come home to myself.’ She was still leading — still strong, still dependable — but she wasn’t eroding herself to keep it that way.

That’s the kind of shift my coaching is here for: helping leaders keep their strength without losing themselves in the process.

When feeling overwhelmed, I find it so helpful to step back and recognise what I can, and cannot, control. And then when more centered and positive, what actually I can and cannot influence . 😁

Can your work feel too personal?

If you’re in the nonprofit or advocacy world, you know — the work is personal.
That’s the strength, but also the trap.

A conservation leader I coach was furious when a major partner published a watered-down, politically safe report on plastic pollution.
He knew it misrepresented the real issues — and he felt it as a personal betrayal.

But here’s the thing: taking it personally was draining his energy and his credibility.

In coaching, we worked on emotional boundaries — learning how to care deeply without internalizing everything.
He now channels that anger into sharper advocacy, but he’s no longer consumed by it.

This shift helped him preserve his wellbeing, and made him a more strategic, resilient leader.

If you’re burning out because you care too much — you’re not alone.
Coaching helps you care better, without it costing your peace.

Get in touch, I'm here to help.

Well said staff! After coaching, one of my hospitality clients now sees his role as putting staff first, then guest! Hugely successful for the business!
