HGYFL - Hampshire Girls Youth Football League

For many it's the last week of training on grass before the players need to go to floodlights and all weather pitches.

What does your club or team do over the winter?

This should be normal in grassroots football. ⚽

After the final whistle, the coach made sure every player went over and shook the referee’s hand.

No fuss. No big speech. Just a simple bit of respect.

Referees give up their time too, and without them there’s no game.

These habits start young.

More of this, please. 👏

Nothing clears a grassroots touchline faster than the words:

“Can anyone run the line?” 😂

Suddenly phones become VERY interesting.
Shoelaces need tying.
Coffee needs finishing.
And three people remember they’re “definitely busy.”

Every club has that one hero who eventually sighs, grabs the flag and gets on with it.

Respect to the reluctant linesmen or lineswoman of grassroots football. ⚽️😂

Young referees are learning too.

They will miss things.
They will make mistakes.
They won’t get every decision right.

Neither do players.
Neither do coaches.
Neither do parents.

What they shouldn’t have to deal with is abuse from adults on the touchline while they’re trying to do their best.

Without referees, there is no game.

So support them. Give them room to learn. And remember that the young person holding the whistle is someone’s child too.

Would you like the caption to lean more towards defending young referees or calling out the adults who abuse them?
