⚓ PORTLAND HARBOUR ENTRANCES 🌊

Portland Harbour is a huge and fascinating piece of our local coastline, but with three historic ship entrances.

👀 So what do we know about them? Well, if you’ve been doing your research, and passage planning you should know where you should be entering and departing.

🔴 SOUTH SHIP CHANNEL
The southern entrance is closed and should not be used. It is obstructed by the wreck of HMS Hood, which was deliberately sunk across the entrance in 1914 as a defensive measure. There are also overhead cables in the area.

🟢 EAST SHIP CHANNEL
This is the principal entrance for commercial shipping. Large commercial vessels regularly use this channel, so leisure vessels need to be particularly aware of traffic and the port’s traffic signals.

🔵 NORTH SHIP CHANNEL
This is the main entrance for recreational and small craft entering and leaving the Inner Harbour. Leisure vessels are advised to use the marked fairway and keep a good lookout for commercial traffic.

📻 LISTEN IN – VHF CH 74
Portland Harbour Radio operates on VHF Channel 74. Keep a listening watch and follow the instructions of the Harbour Authority.

Show some courtesy and if you do need to use the east ship channel make sure you get permission from the port!

🚦 WATCH THE PORT TRAFFIC SIGNALS

The entrances are controlled by port traffic signals:

🔴 Fixed red – a commercial vessel is departing. Do not impede its passage.

🟢 Fixed green – a commercial vessel is entering. Do not impede its passage.

🔴 Flashing red – the entrance is closed. Await instructions from Portland Harbour Radio.

⚠️ REMEMBER:
Portland Harbour is a busy mixed-use harbour. Commercial ships, fishing vessels, yachts, motorboats and other craft can all be operating in the same area.

Good preparation, a proper lookout, listening watch and understanding the harbour signals all help make entering and leaving Portland Harbour safer for everyone.

Notice To Mariners

23rd September through to 10th October

Portland Outer Harbour, Degaussing Range

Working channel: VHF Ch10

Mariners are advised that QINETQ will be conducting works to install range infrastructure at the two range sites off Grove point will take place during the above dates.

Works will include the following operations:

• Degaussing Range: Installation of 4 marker buoys utilizing the vessel Grima.

• Acoustic and Degaussing Range: Installation of various items on the seabed utilizing the vessel Wildiscover and the Apex dive team.

• Diving operations: Dive flag Alpha will be flown whenever divers are in the water.

Mariners are requested to give all vessels a wide berth during operations

Congratulations to Neil Withers and David Collins for completing their RYA First Aid Instructor Course at Hamble today…

Once all the paperwork has been completed we will be to run RYA First Aid training courses for our RYA Training Centre at Unit F McKay Way Lynch Lane Weymouth Dorset DT4 9DN..

The RYA First Aid course is a one-day, classroom-based course designed to give you the skills to respond confidently if someone on board needs help.

You'll be taught by qualified first aid instructors with genuine boating experience, covering first aid specifically for the marine environment rather than a standard land-based syllabus, since factors like cold water, limited space and being some way from help all change how you respond.

By the end of the day you'll know how to put someone in the recovery position, deliver CPR, treat common injuries, and call for medical assistance by VHF radio.

This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

NEED THIS FOR A COMMERCIAL ENDORSEMENT?

If you hold or are applying for a commercial endorsement on a vessel certified under the UK's Small Commercial Vessel Codes of Practice (up to Category 2 area of operation), RYA First Aid is the preferred qualification. It's the only one of the accepted courses (RYA First Aid, STCW Elementary First Aid, Sea Fish First Aid) that covers Category C medical stores as detailed in MSN 1905 (M+F) — required if you're the person responsible for first aid on board. Depending on your vessel, you may need a higher level of certification.

When you apply for or renew your endorsement, you'll need to declare that you understand your responsibility for holding a valid first aid certificate.
