Racers keep up an intense pace, with their speeds sometimes clocking up to 80-100 km/h (50-62 mph). Some even achieve speeds over 100 km/h, using only gravity, aerodynamics and stellar breaking skills.

The Tour de France was actually a publicity stunt devised by Géo Lefèvre to help sports newspaper L’Auto outsell their competitor. The first race was held in 1903 with just 6 stages that covered a staggering 2,400 km.
