We’ve had a fantastic summer delivering Cycling UK's Big Bike Revival programme — a free programme of bike repairs, learn-to-ride and confidence sessions for adults. 🚲
This week, we welcomed a 74-year-old lady to one of our learn-to-cycle and confidence sessions. She had loved cycling in her youth and enjoyed riding with her children as they grew up. However, following a stroke and other health challenges, she lost her confidence and hadn’t cycled for more than 25 years.
She joined Tuesday’s session determined to get back on a bike. Fear understandably got the better of her at first, so we took things step by step. We started her on a recumbent ICE trike to help her build confidence with cycling and speed, before moving on to a balance bike, practising running along and lifting her feet from the ground.
Then she proved to herself that she could do it.
With a little gentle support, she got onto a two-wheeled bike — and before long, she was cycling around the track, crying with joy because she was riding a bike again! ❤️🚲
Today, she brought her old bike along to one of our free ‘Fix It’ sessions. Just half an hour later, she was riding her own bike again. What an incredible achievement! 🙌
The Big Bike Revival has helped lots of adults learn to ride and build their confidence, and we’re continuing our free lunchtime learn-to-cycle and confidence sessions at Moredon Sporting Hub throughout September.
If you’d like to learn to ride a bike for the first time, or give cycling another go, we’d love to help you get back in the saddle.
