​It was a tough day at the office today as we came up against a clinical Seaburn Juniors side. Charlie D, Charlie H, Leo and Oscar were all unavailable, so Miles and Charlie stepped up an age group to play their first 7v7 game. Despite the scoreline, our boys fought tirelessly until the final whistle, with Oliver putting in a man of the match performance between the posts and Preston getting us on the scoresheet with a great late strike.

Seaburn caught us cold straight from the whistle, striking early in the 1st minute with a finish into the left side of the goal. (0-1)

We regrouped immediately. Oliver gathered a Seaburn shot on the left, before Miles led our first attack, seeing his shot saved in the right side to win us a corner. Oliver was called upon again shortly after, comfortably catching a powerful central free-kick.

​Seaburn then sent a free-kick over the bar, before Lincoln hit a clean volley from a kick-in that was gathered by the visitor's keeper on the left.

​Despite our response, Seaburn proved ruthless. In the 9th minute, a cross from the right was tapped home to double their lead (0-2). Oliver did brilliantly to deny a close-range effort with his legs moments later, but Seaburn added a third in the 11th minute when a rebound was tucked in after Oliver made an initial save from a right-wing cross. (0-3)

​Oliver remained under heavy pressure, making a central save before Seaburn dragged an effort wide left. After another smart stop by Oliver on the left and another off-target Seaburn effort, the visitors added a fourth in the 17th minute with a strike from the edge of the box. (0-4)

​We continued to dig in. Oliver saved another free-kick effort on his left, but in the 19th minute, Seaburn tucked in a second rebound from a tight angle following his initial stop. (0-5)

​Thomas put his body on the line with a brave block inside the box to deny Seaburn, but two quickfire goals in the 21st and 22nd minutes—the second coming after a panicked clearance that only reached the edge of the penalty area—saw Seaburn extend their advantage. (0-7)

​We kept looking for a way back into the match. Finley had a central shot saved, and Thomas blocked yet another free-kick effort after Charlie was penalised for what looked like a perfect tackle.

Charlie then turned provider, sending a brilliant through-ball to Finley, who hit his shot just wide right. Seaburn fired wide left just before the whistle to wrap up a frantic first 25 minutes.
​Half Time

Oliver picked up right where he left off at the start of the second half, making a sharp save at his near post. However, Seaburn found an eighth in the 27th minute when their forward won the ball high upfield and rounded Oliver to score. (0-8)

​We showed great resilience in the second half to restrict Seaburn's chances and build our own momentum. After Seaburn dragged two shots wide, Finley forced a save in the central area. Seaburn put a free-kick wide right, but Oliver produced a spectacular save shortly after, tipping a powerful strike bound for the top left corner past the post.

​Seaburn missed chances from a corner and over the bar before we created our best opening of the half: Finley slid a fantastic through-ball to Miles, whose goal-bound effort was agonisingly blocked on the line by a defender.

​In the 39th minute, Seaburn were awarded a penalty for handball, which was dispatched into the bottom left corner. (0-9)

​Oliver then produced the highlight moment of the match. First tipping a high shot onto the crossbar, the ball dropped for a Seaburn attacker who looked certain to tap it in, but Oliver threw up a leg while grounded to miraculously clear the ball off the line!

​Following three more saves from Oliver and a wide effort by Seaburn, our persistence finally paid off in the 46th minute. Preston pressed relentlessly to win the ball high up the pitch, unleashed a strike with his left foot, and fired past the keeper to net a thoroughly deserved goal! (1-9)

​Finley had one final effort charged down by the Seaburn keeper before the referee brought the game to an end.

Tonight the boys came up against strong opposition in a friendly match.

We matched West End for large periods of the game, but our opposition were clinical in the critical moments.

Finley scored a great goal in the first half after Oscar played a ball up the line, Finley let it run, turning his man, before running through down the right wing and firing a shot into the bottom left corner.

We scored the goal of the game in the 2nd half as Oscar finished well into the left side of goal after a great passing move involving Thomas, Oscar and Lincoln, who provided the assist.

Heartbreak in the final minute saw our U9 Reds narrowly fall to a clinical Hebburn Town Barca side, despite a performance packed with bravery, woodwork-rattling efforts, and endless attacking intent.

​We started the game brightly, asking early questions of the Hebburn defence. Lincoln saw a central effort saved before the visitors reminded us of their threat, forcing Oliver into a brilliant save in the top left corner after a wicked deflection.

​The chances kept coming for us. Lincoln’s top-corner free-kick was well dealt with by the visitor's keeper, Leo saw a deflected shot spin wide, and Lincoln fired just wide of the left post after connecting with a pinpoint corner from Will. Oscar then looked certain to score when the Hebburn keeper spilled a cross, but his snapshot was saved.

​At the other end, Hebburn fired wide right, and Oliver was called into action again with a smart save to his right. We immediately went back on the attack; Charlie unleashed a brilliant through-ball to Oscar, who sliced his effort just wide right. Leo then tested the keeper again with a powerful free-kick aimed at the right side of the goal.

​The deadlock was broken in the 11th minute. A Hebburn attacker showed great individual skill to beat two of our defenders before placing a fine finish into the top right corner. (0-1)

​We responded with immense character. Leo showed great bravery to block a goal-bound Hebburn shot, sparking a wave of Ryhope pressure. Lincoln fired wide from an Oscar cross, Lenny saw a shot saved on the left, and Will was denied at the near post. Oscar then turned his marker beautifully on the right wing, driving forward and unleashing a cross-shot that agonisingly struck the left-hand post.

Moments later, Will's initial shot was saved, and Oscar's rebound was bravely blocked by the keeper.

​Our relentless pressing finally paid off in the 16th minute. Oscar forced the keeper into a mistake following a heavy backpass, and Charlie was perfectly placed to poke home the loose ball to draw us level! (1-1)

​Just before the break, Hebburn were awarded a free-kick that looked destined for the top right corner, but Thomas produced a magnificent, brave header on the goal line to clear. An indirect free-kick was subsequently awarded, but we stood tall to see out the danger.

​Half Time

​The second half was a story of incredible Ryhope pressure, but the footballing gods just wouldn't smile on us. Oscar saw a deflected shot go wide right, before a frantic goalmouth scramble saw him have two consecutive shots blocked on the line.

​Charlie fired wide left, and Thomas saw a goal-bound effort blocked behind for a corner by a desperate Hebburn defence. Oliver kept things level at the back with another fine save in his top left corner, before Will saw his free-kick saved.

​We continued to press high up the pitch. Another shot was blocked before Leo had a shot saved, followed by Oliver making another crucial intervention at the other end. Leo was a constant threat, forcing a save that resulted in a corner, from which he nearly scored himself at the near post.

​Oliver was called upon again to make a smart save to his left, before Finley had a central effort saved. Hebburn served a warning reminder of their threat when a volley from a right-wing corner struck our right post.

​Back came Ryhope. Finley saw a shot saved on the right, Oscar fired just over the bar, and Oliver produced a magnificent 1v1 save, with the rebound being fired wide by the Hebburn forward.

​Then came the cruel 49th-minute blow. In the final minute of the match, we unfortunately failed to deal with a bouncing ball in the penalty area, allowing a Hebburn attacker to fire a shot into the bottom left corner. (1-2)

​Full Time

An incredibly tough result to take after dominating the efforts on goal, but we were punished for not taking our chances. While it wasn't the fairy-tale ending we wanted for our final match of the season, and our last ever game playing at Under 9s level, the boys can hold their heads high. The grass pitch slowed our passing game today, but we are proud of the effort and progress throughout this entire campaign as we look forward to the next chapter!

​A tough evening at the Ford Hub saw us put in a spirited performance against a sharp Sunderland West End side. Despite the heavy scoreline, our lads never let their heads drop, battling right until the final whistle and creating plenty of chances of our own.

​The opening exchanges were frantic, with West End threatening early by dragging two separate shots wide right. Our goalkeeper, Oliver, was called into action early on, making a solid save in the centre of his goal to keep things level.

We began to find our footing when one of our shots took a deflection and spun agonisingly wide left, before West End responded with another missed target to the right.

​Lenny had a brilliant opportunity to break the deadlock from the edge of the box, but unfortunately dragged his shot wide left when well-placed. Minutes later, Charlie showed great bravery by throwing his body in the way of a goalbound West End free kick to block the danger. At the other end, Leo tested their keeper with a rising shot that was saved high in the goal.

​Oliver then produced a spectacular double save from close range, but the pressure finally told in the 17th minute. West End found space down the right wing, driving forward unchallenged before slotting a clinical finish into the bottom left corner to make it 0-1.

​Oliver kept us in it moments later by winning a crucial 1v1 battle, with West End blazing the rebound over the bar. However, the visitors doubled their lead in the 20th minute when a crowded penalty box unsighted our defence, and a shot snuck through bodies into the near post (0-2).

​We won a corner as we fought to get back into the game, but West End countered rapidly, shooting wide left. In the 23rd minute, a resilient block from our defence unfortunately fell kindly to a West End attacker, who smashed the rebound high into the net for 0-3.

​The woodwork came to our rescue when a West End effort rattled the left post, before Oliver made another smart stop to his left. West End missed another chance wide left, but struck again right on the stroke of half-time. In the 25th minute, a low, hard drive from the edge of the box flew through a sea of legs and down the centre of the goal, leaving us 0-4 down at the break.

​Half time

We started the second half with plenty of energy, though West End generated the first few chances—a deflected shot going wide right and a free kick being bravely charged down by our wall. Oliver then produced a stunning, full-stretch save to his left to deny the opposition.

​Oscar looked to spark our attack with a shot that went just wide right. Unfortunately, West End extended their lead in the 39th minute, executing a free kick from range directly into the left side of the goal (0-5).

Three minutes later, a slick passing move from the visitors opened us up, resulting in a clinical finish into the left side of the net (0-6).

West End then added a spectacular seventh in the 43rd minute, curling a beautiful effort into the top right corner from the edge of the box (0-7).

​Our lads refused to throw in the towel, and our persistence paid off. After Leo fired an optimistic warning shot wide right, we got our reward in the 44th minute. Applying a brilliant high press, Leo intercepted the ball deep in West End territory and calmly poked it home to get us on the scoresheet (1-7).

​The joy was short-lived, however, as West End responded a minute later when an absolute heartbreak of a cross from the right was inadvertently sliced into our own for an own goal (1-8).

​West End continued to push, firing over the bar and wide right on a counter-attack, while Oliver gathered another central effort. But we kept asking questions. Leo drove down the left wing and unleashed an absolute piledriver from distance that crashed spectacularly off the crossbar.

​Oliver made another save to his right, and in the 50th minute, our determination paid off again. Oscar turned provider, playing a sharp ball to Leo, who showed immense grit to battle through and slot the ball into the right side of the goal for his second of the match (2-8).

​There was still time for drama at the back as Oliver stopped another 1v1, before Thomas made an unbelievable, last-ditch tackle to deny a certain goal on the rebound. We pushed for a third right until the end, with Leo driving a right-footed shot wide left and Oscar seeing a fine effort brilliantly saved in the bottom left corner just before the referee blew for full-time.

​A learning curve for us against a clinical side, but a much improved second-half performance gives us plenty to build on!
