Basketball coaching is changing—and this is how I’m using AI, game statistics and video analysis to make better coaching decisions. 🏀📊
After analysing our last two games, I created a system that turns the evidence into:
✅ Player-efficiency rankings
✅ Offensive, defensive and three-point rotations
✅ Game-day minutes plans
✅ Individual player-development reports
✅ Game-based practice priorities
✅ Organised video clips for every player
This isn’t AI replacing the coach.
It’s technology organising the evidence—while coaching experience, context and judgement make the final decision.
My aim is to spend less time searching through spreadsheets, notes and video—and more time developing players and helping the team improve.

I used to think great coaching meant talking more.
Then another coach said something I'll never forget:
"You don't actually coach them."
At first, it frustrated me.
Because what they saw was very different to what I was trying to achieve.
No constant whistles. No stopping every mistake. No endless technical demonstrations.
Instead, I was designing environments where players had to perceive, decide and solve problems for themselves.
To an outsider, it can look like chaos.
But beneath that chaos is intentional design.
Since changing my approach in 2016, I've still seen players develop, teams improve, and we've gone on to win leagues, tournaments and championships.
I've learned that coaching expertise isn't measured by how much you speak.
It's measured by what your players can do when you say nothing.
Curious to hear your thoughts...
What does great coaching look like to you? 👇

Most people think great coaching sounds like this...
"Elbow in." "Stay low." "Attack the top foot." "Keep your head up."
More instruction. More talking. More corrections.
But that's not how players become great decision-makers.
The best coaches often speak less.
Instead, they manipulate constraints. They design representative games. They ask better questions.
Because basketball isn't a game of remembering instructions.
It's a game of perceiving information, adapting to changing situations, and solving problems under pressure.
The measure of coaching expertise isn't how much technical or tactical knowledge a coach has.
It's whether players can still make great decisions when the coach says nothing at all.
Agree or disagree? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
⬇️ Save this for your next practice and share it with a coach who needs to hear it.

Stop posting like everyone is watching.
One of the biggest mistakes players make is creating content for the algorithm instead of the one person who actually matters.
A coach. A scout. A recruiter.
They don't need another cinematic highlight reel.
They need to know:
• What kind of teammate is this player?
• How do they think about the game?
• Are they coachable?
• What drives them when nobody's watching?
That's why the most valuable content often isn't the most edited—it's the most authentic.
Talk about your journey.
Share what you're learning.
Explain how you're improving.
Let people see the person behind the player.
The algorithm changes every few months.
Human connection never does.
What's one thing about your game that most people don't know? 👇🏀

From a council estate in Stoke to coaching around the world 🌎
There was no secret.
No shortcuts.
No overnight success.
Just setbacks, self-doubt, and an obsession with getting better.
Basketball gave direction when life felt like it had none.
It took an overweight kid who could barely finish a scrimmage and opened doors to America, China, Vietnam, Italy, and beyond.
But this story isn't about travelling the world.
It's about proving that where you start doesn't decide where you finish.
If one person from a city with almost no basketball opportunities could build a career helping players around the world...
Imagine what's possible when the right opportunities finally exist.
That's why Next Play Basketball was created.
Not just to build better players.
To build belief.
If this story resonates with you, follow the journey.
The best chapter is still being written.
