Getting six pack abs seems like such a cool goal but most people I work with, myself included, don’t really want to go to that extreme.

For me, as long as I feel confident on the beach, that’s lean enough.

But the really important goal for me is that I have energy for Sofia and Harry.

Every now and again they get the best of me, but generally, I’m the one tiring them out and able to running around with them, carry them when they want, and enjoy the fun without feeling knackered, sweaty or out of breath.

Losing weight helps with that. Getting in a workout 2-3 times per week helps with that. And if you keep it simple, do the right things and ignore all the stress-inducing BS rules, it doesn’t have to take over your life.

Six Pack vs Getting Your Confidence Back

Getting a six pack and “front cover of Women’s Health” shredded requires a long period of serious dieting, significant sacrifice, and a level of restriction that most people would find completely unsustainable alongside a normal life.

But that’s probably not your goal.

Your goal is more likely to get into a size 10 or 12, feel good in a medium or large t-shirt, have some shape and definition, and feel like yourself again - the way you did when you were younger.

That goal doesn’t require extreme dieting. It doesn’t require cutting out food groups, doing two hours of cardio a day, or following a plan that means you have to cancel social events..

A lot of people are struggling because they’re applying six-pack-level extremes to a goal that doesn’t need them. And then when those extremes inevitably become too much and they give up, they feel like they’ve failed - when the plan was always the wrong tool for the job.

Match the approach to your actual goal. You’ll actually be able to get there, enjoy the process more, and be able to stay there once you do.

Meal Out... Diet Ruined?

Monday to Thursday you’re on it. Breakfast, lunch, dinner - in a good routine, making solid progress, feeling like this time is different.

Then Friday comes. Meal out with the family, or you’re heading to the Boro match with a few beers and a burger from the van.

And that becomes the first domino.

One meal turns into a write-off weekend. The write-off weekend turns into “what’s the point” and before you know it, a Friday night out has cost you a month of progress - not because of the calories from that one night, but because of everything that followed and the “all or nothing” mindset that keeps you stopping and starting over.

The goal is to get to a point where the Friday meal out is just a Friday meal out. You enjoy it, you have what you want in a reasonable amount, and Saturday morning you’re back to your normal routine without the guilt, the spiral, or the catastrophising.

That’s what makes fat loss sustainable through a social life - enjoying the social events without letting them become the trigger that takes everything off the rails.

You’re Too Busy For Complex Diets And Endless Cardio

Meal replacement shakes. Everything freshly prepped. Cut out carbs entirely. Seven days a week in the gym doing workouts you hate.

These are extreme approaches. And a lot of people resort to them far earlier than they need to, or when their actual goal and lifestyle simply don’t call for them.

And if you’ve got a demanding career, kids, and a social life you’d like to keep, the idea of going seven days a week to the gym or following a time-consuming meal plan is enough to make you quit before you’ve started.

These extreme plans don’t work for long because your life just doesn’t match up with them.

A flexible, simpler, and more enjoyable approach to fat loss - one that works around your career, your kids, and your weekends - will always outperform the “perfect” plan that you can only stick to for 3 weeks before it becomes impossible.

End Your Food Guilt At Social Events

When you go for a meal out with family with a long list of rules about what you can and can’t eat, and you spend the whole night stressed about the impact it’s going to have on the scales - one of two things usually happens.

You heavily restrict yourself, leave feeling miserable, and spend the next day in a guilt spiral anyway. Or you crack, think “I’ve had the parmo, might as well have dessert, might as well have five pints, might as well get a takeaway on the way home” - and what was a Friday night meal turns into a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday blowout.

Three days later you’re wondering why it’s been such a disastrous week. But it wasn’t the Friday night that did it. It was the all-or-nothing thinking that turned one meal out into a full weekend write-off.

The alternative is going to those social events without the guilt, enjoying them properly, having what you actually want in a reasonable amount, and coming away feeling recharged and ready to get back to it - rather than already three days behind.

Dieting Rules Create Food Guilt

If you’ve been around the block a few times with diets, you’ll know that every plan comes with its own set of rules. Cut out this food group. Only eat clean. Avoid processed food. Demonise carbs, sugar, fat, seed oils, or whatever the current villain happens to be.

And after years of following those rules, starting over, following different rules, and starting over again - you end up with a relationship with food that’s wrapped in guilt, anxiety, and obsession.

And you are left wondering “what the hell am I actually allowed to eat?!”

The fix isn’t another set of rules. It’s removing as many of them as possible and getting to a place where food is just food - where you can make reasonable choices without the internal anxiety and fear that you feel when you’re deciding what to have for dinner..

Is there “better” food than others? Of course.

But is any food that bad that it’s worth stressing out about, as long as we’re aware of how it can lead to overeating (because it’s so tasty for us) or that it’s very calorie dense and means it won’t keep us full for long? No.

Stop “Starting Again Monday”

If you’ve spent this year going up and down on the scales, stopping and starting three or four times, trying different diets, cancelling gym memberships - and you’re basically in the same place you were in January - you can turn it around.

Stringing 12 weeks together where you’re consistent in the gym, you’ve had every opportunity to eat rubbish and chosen moderation instead, and you’ve worked through the obstacles rather than letting them derail you - that does something to you beyond the physical progress.

It changes how you see yourself.

Right now that story is “I’m a serial dieter. I can’t stick to anything.” Twelve weeks of evidence that contradicts that changes it. All of a sudden you’ve done something you didn’t think you could do, and the way you look in the mirror, the way you feel in photos, the way you try on clothes - all of it shifts because your opinion of yourself has shifted.

The Christmas parties are 12 weeks away. You could spend that time starting again on Monday, or you could spend it actually getting somewhere.
