Edgeley Villa 5-4 Cheadle Hulme Albion

A much-needed pre-season win for Villa after a nine-goal thriller!

Cheadle took the lead when a good cross was stood up at the back post and headed home, with Villa struggling to find their usual rhythm as too many passes went astray.

Towards the back end of the half, Connor Walton grabbed his first goal of pre-season in some style, hitting a dipping half-volley that gave the keeper no chance to make it 1-1.

Cheadle restored their lead in the Second Half with villa trying to play out through the back saw a pass into Tom Hannan get pinched and the Cheadle player produced a great strike past Phil Dalton.

Changes were made but the intensity never dropped. Luke Walsh was having plenty of joy linking up with Jordy Cunningham down the left, and it wasn't long before Luke got in behind and picked out Gaz Marsh, who continued his impressive pre-season goalscoring form to make it 2-2.

Luke was the provider again after a lovely clipped ball from Sam Hall released him. His ball across the face of goal was superbly finished by a sliding Jack Atkinson to put Villa 3-2 ahead.

Cheadle responded, though, capitalising on mistakes from Connor Walton and then Callum Thompson to turn the game around and lead 4-3.

Villa weren't finished.

A corner wasn't dealt with, Luke brought the ball under control and prodded the ball home from close range for 4-4.

Then, with just five minutes remaining, Villa completed the comeback. A free kick by Matthew Aked into the box was brilliantly taken in by Jack Atkinson, who laid it off for Luke Walsh to finish and seal a dramatic 5-4 victory! ⚽🔥

⚽ FULL TIME | Edgeley Villa 1–3 Sporting Lancs FC

Momentum is a huge thing in grassroots football, especially in tight games, and facing a side used to winning we knew we’d have to take our chances when they came unfortunately today was not that day.

Villa made the perfect start, with Rick Kelly putting us 1–0 up early on. Sporting Lancs were always in the game though and eventually capitalized on a mix-up at the back to level things up.

Chances came and went for Villa which, on another day, would have been tucked away. Despite going in level, it was undoubtedly some of our best football of pre-season so far during the opening 45 minutes.

More chances came our way at the start of the second half before a flurry of Villa substitutions disrupted the momentum we’d built. Sporting Lancs took advantage and found two more goals following defensive errors, although their Second goal was taken really well.

The result probably doesn’t tell the full story of the game. There were plenty of positives to take from the performance, particularly against a strong side who are used to winning football matches. We created chances, competed well and showed what we’re capable of for long periods.

After a couple of difficult results, it’s another opportunity to get minutes into the lads, keep working on how we want to play and hopefully put in a much-improved performance as we continue our preparations for the 2026/27 season.
