Thank you to everyone (130 people!) who came to Sunday’s screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing at the Great Hall and joined discussions afterwards.

Having a shared awareness of the challenges we face has never been more important.

Look out for more screenings run by the community soon. And put the evening of 8th November in your diary for the next meeting on local action - to reduce our impact, share knowledge and build resilience. Everyone is welcome and needed.

Sadly due to the poor apple harvest this year the community Apple Afternoon (3rd October) is being cancelled.

The low yield of apples seen this autumn is primarily due to the heat and drought conditions over the spring and summer months.

Additionally, a larger population of apple ermine moths has added to the problem. Caterpillars of the moth defoliate trees, reducing the number of apples produced. The rise of ermine moth numbers during 2026 has been exacerbated due to the hot and dry summer.

We apologise for this and very much hope next year’s apple harvest will be better.

📢 At its September meeting, Cholsey Parish Council agreed to ask Oxfordshire County Council to proceed with a formal consultation on a proposed residents' parking scheme in Cholsey. This follows concerns raised by residents about the impact of station-related parking in parts of the village.

We know this is a topic that generates strong and differing views, and councillors did not reach this decision lightly. Requesting a formal consultation is not the same as approving a scheme. Rather, it ensures that residents and businesses have the opportunity to comment on any proposals before decisions are made.

The next step will be for Oxfordshire County Council to develop a draft scheme for Cholsey. This would then be followed by the public consultation, which is currently anticipated to take place in January.

At the same time, we continue to pursue additional parking provision for both cars and cycles at Cholsey Station. While this is outside the parish council's direct control, we recognise its importance to residents and rail users and will continue to press for progress.

We encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to take part in the consultation when it is launched and make their views known.

On Sunday 27th Sept, Cholsey Great Hall is showing the People's Emergency Briefing. This screening, in our community, is one of over 3600 being shown across the UK, bringing together people from local communities to hear the latest evidence about the climate and nature crisis, and to discuss how to respond (https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map). It follows on from a National Emergency Briefing (Nov 2025), where leading experts presented the latest information to politicians and other influential people in Westminster. The experts delivered information on risks facing the UK but also importantly all speakers offer credible hope if action is taken now. The film is recommended for 16 and above. The Parish Council has received the following petition (deadline: 23rd August) asking Oxfordshire County Council to help those who are able to do so, to walk and cycle more safely in our area - including to the train station.

Anyone who lives, works or studies in Oxfordshire can sign the petition.

We, the undersigned, call on Oxfordshire County Council to urgently prioritize and fund the delivery of a high-quality active travel corridor connecting Benson to Cholsey Rail Station, with a direct spur to Wallingford School.

Our Transport Committee have been in touch with Thames Travel regarding a temporary bus stop for the 136 bus during the current road closure at the top of Papist Way.

As of today, until the end of the road closure, the 136 will also stop at the top of Honey Lane, near the junction with Papist Way. Thames Travel are unable to provide a sign for the temporary bus stop but have said that if passengers clearly signal to the driver, all drivers have been informed to stop. If alighting from the bus, please press the bell onboard in plenty of time.

A quick reminder that from 3rd August the Reading Road end of Papist Way will also be closed for phase 2 of the major gas works.

Parish Councillors are attending weekly update calls with SGN. They have confirmed that the gas mains replacement is on schedule.
We are continuing to chase for news on 136 bus route service plans when Papist Way closes...

Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles and for access to premises which are only accessible from the closed section of road. Pedestrian access is maintained. Cyclists must dismount and walk.
