Ben Dabbs was the last of the four Shropshire Reds. Born in Oakengates in 1909, he joined Liverpool from his local club, Oakengates Town, in 1932.

The left-back made 56 competitive appearances for the Reds, becoming a regular during the 1936–37 season.

His move to Anfield came following a recommendation from Liverpool great Harry Chambers, who had been playing locally for Oakengates.

There was another fascinating football connection in the family - Dabbs was also related to England and Wolves legend Billy Wright.

Another remarkable Shropshire link hidden within Liverpool’s history. Will there be anymore?

💡 Born in Shrewsbury, Danny Guthrie progressed through Liverpool’s Academy before making his competitive first-team debut against Reading in the League Cup in October 2006.

The midfielder made seven appearances for the Reds under Rafael Benítez, with the highlight being a Champions League start against Galatasaray at Istanbul’s Atatürk Stadium.
Danny later played for Southampton, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Reading, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Walsall.

💡 One of Liverpool’s lesser known, but most significant Shropshire connections was Tom Bush.

Born in Hodnet in 1914, Bush joined Liverpool from Shrewsbury Amateurs in 1933 and went on to make 69 competitive appearances for the Reds.

After retiring as a player, he remained at Liverpool and played an important role in developing the club’s younger talent. Five members of his junior development team later collected medals when Liverpool won the FA Cup for the first time in 1965.

Bush spent 37 years with Liverpool, excluding his wartime service — an extraordinary contribution both on and off the pitch!
