How Should Your Hand Be Positioned for the Safest, Most Efficient Straight Punch? ⭐🥊

One of the most common mistakes is people focusing purely on hitting the target, rather than how they deliver the punch.

A simple cue that can make a huge difference is this:

Start with your fist closed and the outside of your thumb lightly touching your eyebrow. From there, focus on extending your arm so that your index finger knuckle becomes the final point of the extension, making contact with the target before immediately retracting your hand back to its starting position, with your thumb returning to your eyebrow.

Why does this matter?

✅ It promotes better alignment of the wrist, forearm, and shoulder, helping you transfer force more efficiently.
✅ It reduces the temptation to overreach, making it less likely you’ll hyperextend your elbow.
✅ It encourages you to return your hand quickly to a strong defensive guard, helping protect you from counters.

Do you consciously think about your hand placement when you punch, or is it something you’ve never considered? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Great session working through two simple but highly effective drills that build strong fundamentals for both Boxing and Muay Thai. 🥊

These are drills you can easily work on with a training partner, helping each other improve while developing good habits that transfer into sparring and competition.

Drill 1 – The Pull Back
A common mistake is trying to move only the head. Remember, where your feet go, your head follows. Keep your lead foot planted while moving your rear foot back to create distance in a balanced, controlled way. This allows you to evade the strike without panicking and puts you in a strong position to counter. The amount of movement will vary depending on what’s being thrown, whether it’s a short-range hook or a longer-range strike such as a kick.

Drill 2 – Guard and Reply
This drill helps you become comfortable receiving shots on a solid guard before responding with your own strike. It also teaches the attacking partner an equally important lesson: every time you throw a punch, you must expect something to come back. Staying balanced, composed and ready to defend is what allows you to attack and respond effectively.

Fundamentals like these are what create confident, well-rounded strikers. Train with purpose, help each other improve, and enjoy the process.

We’ve been blown away by all the lovely messages following our recent session at Garden City Court Care Home – thank you! ❤️

One question that kept coming up was, “Do you do a warm-up before the boxing?” Rather than just tell you... we thought we’d show you!

Every warm-up is tailored to the group, taking into account experience, ability and the reason for training. In our care home sessions, we like to make the warm-up a little less physical and a little more cognitive. We’ve found it helps everyone feel more relaxed, engaged and confident before moving on to the pads and those all-important “left” and “right” instructions. 🥊

We hope this gives you a little insight into how we approach our sessions. If you’ve got any other questions, we’d love to hear from you!
