Life coaching, improving the lives of young people Hi, I'm Kieran, I am a professionally qualified Life Coach working with young people to improve their lives.

What is coaching & how can it help young people? In a nutshell, coaching is a practical way to get you from where you are to where you want to be through advise, guidance & challenging. Coaching can help young people make positive improvements in their lives and set them up for success as they transition through school, secondary school onto college and university and into their career. When you feel stuck, it is tempting to look for a perfect plan.

Usually, you do not need one.

You need a little more clarity about what is really going on.

Here are three questions I come back to:

What am I avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?

Sometimes “I don’t know what to do” really means “I know, but I’m nervous about the conversation, decision or possible outcome.”

What would make this feel 10% lighter?

Not fixed. Not perfect. Just lighter.

A smaller next step is often more useful than waiting for a dramatic breakthrough.

If I trusted myself a little more, what would I do next?

You may not need more advice. You may need permission to act on something you already know.

Being stuck is not always a sign that you are lost.

Sometimes it is simply a sign that you need space, honesty and one small step forward.

Which of these questions feels most useful to you today?

You do not have to dominate a group to lead it.

Sometimes leadership is including somebody, staying calm when others react or doing the job you said you would do.

I can finish a good book, underline half of it and still struggle to remember the useful parts a month later.

That is why I now use a mixture of Apple Notes and a handwritten commonplace book.

Apple Notes helps me capture ideas quickly. Writing by hand makes me slow down and think about what the idea means, where it connects and how I might use it.

The important part is the weekly review.

I return to what I captured, remove what no longer matters and choose one idea to apply. It might become a coaching question, an experiment or a change in how I approach something.

Reading gives us information.

Reviewing and applying it turns that information into something useful.

Because I read this, I am going to…

What idea from your recent reading could you put into practice this week?

Some decisions become clearer through thinking.

Others only become clearer once you begin.

What is the smallest safe step that creates new information?

I recently came across an idea from Sir Ken Robinson that got me thinking.

He suggested that many of our strengths are like natural resources—hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.

It reminded me of something I see regularly in coaching.

Many young people believe they’re “not confident”, “not academic” or simply “not good at anything”. More often than not, that isn’t true. They just haven’t found the right opportunity, challenge or environment for those strengths to emerge.

One of the things Sir Ken Robinson challenged throughout his career was the idea that everyone learns and develops in the same way. Schools do an incredible job, but no single environment can reveal every person’s unique strengths.

Sometimes confidence isn’t missing.

Sometimes it simply hasn’t been discovered yet.

That’s why I encourage young people to keep exploring. Try something new. Learn a skill. Join a club. Volunteer. Read a book. Have conversations with different people.

You don’t always discover what you’re capable of by thinking.

Often, you discover it by doing.

Perhaps the question isn’t:

“What am I good at?”

Perhaps it’s:

“What haven’t I explored yet?”

One of the best investments you can make is an hour without distractions.

A good book. A coffee. Fresh air. Time to think.

These quiet moments often shape the way we show up for the rest of the day.

Quiet confidence doesn’t always look impressive from the outside.

Sometimes it’s just:
showing up
doing the work
handling things better than before
keeping your word to yourself

That kind of confidence lasts because it’s built on proof, not performance.

What makes a good summer for a student?

Not six weeks of doing nothing.

Not six weeks of trying to become a completely different person either.

The CBK Summer Dashboard gives secondary school and university students six simple areas to think about:

🌱 Growth project — something to create, learn or improve
🏃 Health — movement and habits that help you feel well
🎮 Fun — things you enjoy because they are enjoyable
👥 Friends & family — time with people who matter
🏡 Responsibilities — work, chores and practical life admin
😴 Recovery — proper rest after a demanding year

The aim is not to set six ambitious goals.

It is to ask: “What would good enough look like in each part of my summer?”

One small intention for each category creates direction without turning the holidays into another school term.

Then, once a week:

What worked?
What was missing?
What needs adjusting?

A successful summer should leave a young person with good memories, useful evidence and enough energy for what comes next.

Clear thinking. Better action. Stronger you.

Sometimes life is genuinely hard. The loss, frustration, unfairness or exhaustion is real

But there is a point where acknowledging pain can become dwelling in a story that leaves us feeling smaller and less able to act.

My reminder today is simple:
Pain is real. Self-pity is optional.
This is not self-blame and it is not “just think positive.” It is the choice to ask:

What is actually true?
Is the story I’m telling useful?
What is within my control?
Does this need to take up the whole day?

We may not control what happened. We can often choose the next conversation, boundary, request, act of care or responsible step.

Name the difficulty. Don’t make it your whole identity. Return to conduct over complaint.

What is one steady action available to you today?
