TOTAL IS MORE THAN TAEKWONDO.

At Total Taekwondo, we believe developing our students goes beyond what happens on the mats.

That’s why we run regular workshops designed to give our students knowledge and skills that support their training, performance and overall development.

Our latest workshop focused on the safe and effective use of massage guns, helping students understand when, where and how they can be used as part of recovery and preparation.

From training and technique to recovery, mindset and education, we’re building athletes who understand how to train, how to recover and how to look after their bodies.

This is what makes Total different.

Thinking about getting the kids into something new this term? Or fancy trying something yourself?

Total Taekwondo is offering free trial classes for ages 4+ at our Southport site — no experience needed. Most people who walk through the door have never thrown a kick in their life, and that's exactly who these classes are for. We lend you everything you need for your first class, there's no contract to sign on the day, and no hard sell.

Our Southport classes run on Mondays and Thursdays, age-specific, so your child trains alongside others their own age. We're based at Unit 2, 16-18 Hall Street, Southport, PR9 0SF.

If you'd rather see what a class looks like before committing anyone, you're welcome to come down and watch one first — no pressure, no obligation.

Message us here to book your free trial, or head to www.totaltaekwondo.co.uk.

KEUMGANG | 금강

Today’s focus was balance, transitions and flow — controlling the body through every change of direction, maintaining stability through the stances and creating seamless movement from one technique into the next.

At an advanced level, the details matter. Centre of gravity, weight transfer, posture, timing and control all have to work together.

Keumgang translates as “diamond”, representing strength, hardness and immovability. Those qualities should be visible in the performance — powerful without being rushed, controlled without becoming rigid.

Quick update for our Total Taekwondo family!

With tonight being a bank holiday and numbers lower than usual, we've decided to cancel this evening's classes. Take the time to relax and enjoy the holiday with family and friends.

We'll see you all back on the mats next week as normal!

How does grading actually work?

It's a question we get a lot, so here's the short version: it isn't automatic, it isn't a countdown you have to watch, and it isn't something you sign yourself up for.

Swipe through for the three things that actually decide when a student grades — eligibility, minimum training time, and who makes the call.

Every class starts and ends the same way: bowing in, bowing out. In between, focus is one of the things we're actually teaching, not just kicks and fitness.

It goes back a long way in taekwondo. Etiquette, self-control and mental focus sit alongside the physical side of training, not underneath it. A pattern only works if you're paying attention to the sequence. Sparring only works if you're paying attention to your opponent, not just your next move.

It's a skill like any other. Built one class at a time, one grade at a time, the same way the kicks are.

First class free. Preston, Southport and Salford.

What focus actually looks like

Focus gets talked about a lot in martial arts, so it's worth being specific about what it actually means at Total.

It's not sitting still. It's listening properly to an instruction instead of half hearing it. It's watching your stance instead of watching the clock. It's trying a technique again properly instead of rushing on to the next one.

We build it in gradually, alongside respect and self-control, because a room full of eight year olds can't hold total concentration for an hour on day one. Nobody expects that. What we're after is a little more each week.

Parents usually notice it away from the mats before their child does. Homework gets easier to sit down to. A tricky moment gets easier to sit with.

No experience needed for your first class. Come and watch one first if that's easier.
