Wizard Wednesday | John Bevan

As we celebrate 150 years of Aberavon Rugby Club, every Wednesday we'll look back at the players who have worn the Blood & Black with pride and helped shape the club's rich history.

This week's Wizard is John Bevan.

πŸ‰ Position: Fly Half

Born in Neath in March 1948, John Bevan built a reputation as one of the most gifted fly-halves to ever pull on the Blood & Black. Alongside his rugby, he studied at St Luke's College in Exeter, but it was at Aberavon where his talent truly shone, forming a famous half-back partnership with Clive Shell that opposition defences dreaded facing.

His club form didn't go unnoticed on the bigger stage. In 1974 he lined up for the Barbarians against the touring New Zealand side at Twickenham, and within months he'd won the first of four Welsh caps, making his Test debut against France in Paris in January 1975. Three years later, in 1977, he earned Lions honours, touring New Zealand and playing in 12 matches for the British Isles.

After hanging up his boots, John stayed close to the club he loved, coaching Aberavon before taking the reins of the Welsh national side from 1982 to 1985. Sadly, he passed away in June 1986 at just 38 years old β€” but his impact on Aberavon and Welsh rugby has never been forgotten.

Thank you for everything you gave to the Wizards.

Aberavon Taking Pre-Season into the Community 09/08/2026

πŸ‰ TAKING PRE-SEASON INTO THE COMMUNITY

This August, we’re taking our preparations for the new season out to the community clubs that are such an important part of rugby in our area.

We kicked things off with a brilliant evening at Aberavon Greenstars last Thursday, with visits to Tata Steel, Baglan and Cwmafan to follow over the coming weeks.

πŸ—£οΈ β€œWe’re all part of the same rugby community. For us, it’s about being visible, building relationships and making sure there is a genuine connection between Aberavon and rugby throughout the area.”

β€” Head Coach, Chris Davies

Greenstars Head Coach Foard Cooksley also spoke about the benefit of the session and the opportunity for their players to experience the standards of an SRC side.
